We had the good fortune of connecting with Raquel Genae Flores and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Raquel Genae, how do you think about risk?
I think risks are woven into the framework of a creative life. One must take risks to create. It takes an incredible amount of bravery to believe in your work and to pursue it every single day. Taking risks has always played a pretty dominant role in my life. I am always ready to jump even when advised not to. I trust myself and my gut so I know even when things might not go “my way” they are always going as intended. Risks are refreshing. They are daring and remind me how thrilling it is to be alive. One of the biggest risks I recently took was publishing my book. It was a big affirmation to the universe that I am dedicated to my passions for life and it really opened this portal within me to keep creating—regardless of the response.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When it comes to my art, I have always moved with emotion. Full heart. Untamed mouth and a wise soul. I lead this way and I’m accepting more of my natural state and the gifts it offers. I believe in the richness of life and when we open ourselves to the world—hands will reach for us back. I am shaping my days as I go, finding my space within this world while sharing my thoughts, hopes, and dreams through poetry. Writing has been with me my entire life. From when I was a little girl, I would scribble little drawings and write about my day. I wrote a lot when I was moving to different cities & countries—it made sense to process change this way. As I grew, writing fueled my love for reading and performance art. My career only recently transformed in a major way because I chose to finally pursue it. I had to allow myself to be the artist that I am. I had to give myself the permission to live my greatest life. I am most proud of writing my first poetry book, Heart of Gold and the healing it’s taken to get to this point on my journey.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I enjoy simple pleasures when hanging out with friends. An ideal week would be trips to Miami Beach, Picnics at Markham Park, Museum trips, and maybe a few road trips to some springs. Homemade food, good friends, and surrounded in nature is all I need.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to collectively shout out all the special and powerful people in my life. My partner. My tribe of women that I lean on and confide in. The community at Goddess Council. I feel like the energy around me has really kept me grounded—especially the last 2 years. Sending so much love to Yaemi Matias, Julius Rosa-Distefano, Brittany Priore, Kiana Davis, Vanessa Marie Flores and so many more!
