We had the good fortune of connecting with RaSheba Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi RaSheba, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think about risks everyday, I think everything in life is a risk between being the person that you currently are and stepping in to the person that you desire to be. The first big risk I took was moving to New York City on my own and telling very few people, not even my parents knew I had moved. I consider this to be a bigger risk than moving away for college because I did that risk with the help of my parents. Driving myself to New York City and not knowing what’s on the other side was a scary thing. I did this with no job, little savings left over after getting an apartment and moving costs. What I did know was that I had to take the risk or else I would always wonder what if, or wish I had done it sooner. From there I see every opportunity that comes my way as a risk even if I feel nervous, unsure of what’s on the other side. I can choose to step into uncertainty or stay in my comfort.
There were many decision behind why I moved to New York City, but one of them came from two advisors of mine. I told them how I desired to be in NYC and they both advised me to just move there and the job will come. Sure enough, I went to a ton of networking events and overtime I landed a job in PR, which really makes everything come full circle for me. It hasn’t been a pretty journey, I’ve made a lot of sacrifices but I do feel and see myself getting closer and closer to my dreams unfolding.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In my current role, I actually ended up here in such an interesting way…at least in my opinion. As I mentioned earlier, I attended a ton of networking events when I first moved to NYC. I was freelancing with a company doing events. One of the events was about Black Professionals in PR. One woman stood out to me, Sakita, who is the owner of House of Success PR. I immediately followed her and stayed in contact. I continued to follow her journey and decided that I wanted to one day work for her. I even joked with my friends that she was my publicist in my head. Then at the top of 2020, I was let gone along with others from my company. I took some time to mentally take care of myself. I reached out to Sakita, started freelancing with her and now I work at House of Success PR as an account coordinator. As cheesy as it is stay i contact with the people you want to work for or just in general, especially if its someone that is in your desired field.
For my personal brand as a content creator I share lifestyle, wellness and adventure content. I fall back and forth out of it. However, I’ve had the realization that I need to create a plan, stay consistent, disciplined and preserve. I’ve learned that I am a creator who is sensitive about my creativity and how the world will perceive it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I’m with a friend my ideal perfect day would be a food tour. One of the best parts about living in NYC is that you can find almost any food at any hour.
I would start the pouring with a stroll in the neighborhood to my favorite coffee shop for a matcha latte with chai. Don’t knock it until you try it, it tastes amazing.
Next, I would head into the city to Chinatown. You have to get a bubble tea and then do dim sum. Even if we’re not eating dim sum, going to different restaurants and getting light bites would be amazing. If they’re a newbie to the city, I have to take them to all the local touristy spots. Then end the night in Harlem, listening to the sounds of the city, having conversation at Red Rooster.
The next day has to be a Brooklyn day. Brooklyn has so many hidden gems that even after three years, I am still discovering more places. For the morning, I would start in Williamsburg at one of my favorite coffee shops Homecoming. I always feel so relaxed there. The ambiance is just peaceful and welcoming. From there I would walk to the water area near the boats and just talk and relax. From there, I would head to little Caribbean. I feel like this is a hidden gem that people talk about but not enough. For lunch I would go to Aunts et Uncles and order the Au Burger with everything added on and have a sorrell. Next door is one of the most authentic Haitian restaurants in New York City. Immaculee Bakery and get a Herring patty. The best patties you will ever eat. Before leaving little Caribbean, I have to walk a few blocks over to my favorite bakery and grab a slice of Pistachio cake. You can tell the owner makes everything with love.
From little Caribbean, we are heading to the Brooklyn museum, its the best to go to to on first Saturdays but it’s nice to also go and enjoy the art in general. Ending the night at brooklyn restaurant. Brooklyn always has a place in my heart. There is so much diversity in Brooklyn and every sub-part is a little different from the next. Spending the rest of the day exploring and seeing where life takes us.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
If I had to pick someone, I would say my professor Kay, she was always very different from the other professors in my college. She was one of the people who encouraged me to move to NYC and really with anything that I shared with her that I wanted to do. She makes having tough conversations easy.
Also, my old boss, Barbara or Barb as we called her. I remember when she hired me she said she didn’t see me staying at the job long, but instead saw me living in Atlanta, LA or NYC. That was my first non-requested confirmation that I had to move. I had to take the leap to NYC, if someone else saw it in me, I had to do it. And to all of the other Barbs in me that see the spark in me that I sometimes miss in myself.
