We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebecca, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The decision to start my own business happened rather organically. Jewelry making and metal smithing started from a desire to engage my hands and create work that allowed me to focus on the meditative process of a task. From there it grew into a way to create work that not only adorns those in my community but helps them to consider the spiritual and divine role of adornment in their lives. I feel I have something to offer to those who are looking for more than just aesthetics when it comes to their adornment choices.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am both an artist and a business owner. I started out as a fine artists primarily working in the medium of photography and film but now find myself making my most impactful work as a jeweler and metalsmith. The work I make under Blavk Jewelry is an extension of my spiritual practice and my way of assisting others with their healing. It’s incredibly important that this specific type of spiritual work is accessible to Black and brown people in my community. So often healing modalities are seen and only accessible to those that can afford luxury. Everyone deserves healing and to feel held, that is the main impetus behind my work.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to recognize my community, I would not be here if it were not for the support of my friends, many mentors and teachers. There are so many people that have impacted my journey I would be remiss to not acknowledge my community and network.
