Meet Ricardo Perez | Filmmaker, Producer & Novelist. Founder & CEO of Mulatos Productions Inc

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ricardo Perez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ricardo, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
What most outsiders don’t realize is how deeply personal this industry is. How much of you ends up in every project, whether it’s a drama that confronts uncomfortable truths or a story that simply makes people laugh, dream, or feel less alone. People often think that working in film, writing novels, or producing content is all about creative freedom. But the truth is, there’s a constant negotiation between vision and vulnerability. Between what the audience expects and what you truly want to say. And the biggest challenge isn’t always technical or financial…, it’s emotional. It’s the courage to stay authentic, even when it doesn’t fit neatly into a trend or genre. I create to entertain. I create to move people. Sometimes that means exposing what’s hidden, and sometimes it means offering escape. But what never changes is the intention behind it. to connect, to stir something real; whether it’s reflection, joy, discomfort, or hope. That emotional precision, that inner honesty; that’s the part most people never see.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work is grounded in one idea: stories matter. Whether I’m directing, producing, or writing a novel, I’m always chasing that one thread that connects us, truth, emotion, contradiction. I didn’t take the easy road. I didn’t wait for permission. I started creating because I had to. Because there were stories in me that wouldn’t let me sleep until they were told. Over the years, I’ve built my own production company, developed films, written books, and designed stories that entertain, challenge, and sometimes even disturb, but always seek to connect.
What sets me apart is that I don’t follow formulas. I follow truth. And that truth can take many shapes, a suspense thriller, a family drama, or a quiet moment of reflection. My projects aren’t meant to please everyone, they’re meant to feel real. That’s where the power is.
What I’m most proud of is staying loyal to my creative vision, even when it wasn’t the “marketable” choice. And still growing, as a professional, as a human, as a storyteller.
The biggest lesson? No one will fight for your voice like you will. You either build your path or spend your life walking someone else’s.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If a friend came to visit, I’d take them to Wynwood, not just because it’s known for its art, but because it feels like a place where ideas breathe freely. It’s vibrant, unpredictable, and deeply human, like all great stories.
We would walk the streets early, before the crowds, when the murals still feel like secrets and the city hasn’t put on its makeup yet. Then we would find a quiet spot for coffee. somewhere, surrounded by people scribbling in notebooks, talking about projects, or just watching the world pass by.
Lunch would be casual, in one of those spots where the food is homemade, the energy is loud but familiar, and no one’s trying too hard to impress. The kind of place where conversations happen naturally and creativity flows with the meal.
We would spend the afternoon moving through the art, not just the polished galleries, but the hidden corners, the spontaneous installations, the little spaces where something real is always happening. That’s where the soul of the city lives.
By sunset, we would find music, live, raw, maybe improvised. Something that reminds us that art doesn’t need permission, just courage. And we would end the night in a space where voices, laughter, and ideas collide, with no agenda, just connection.
Wynwood, to me, is not a destination. It’s a frequency. And when I’m in tune with it, I feel like anything is possible.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, I want to recognize myself, not out of ego, but out of gratitude. For the discipline to keep going, the courage to take creative risks, and the perseverance to keep choosing what I love, even when the path wasn’t clear or easy. This journey has been as personal as it is professional, and I’ve grown by doing what challenges me, what inspires me, and what pushes me to become a better artist and human being. I also want to thank the people, family, friends, collaborators, who believed in me even when all I had was a dream and a stubborn commitment to see it through. Their faith, their support, and their presence have meant more than words can express. No success is ever truly solo. But it always starts within.
