We had the good fortune of connecting with Rick Lopez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rick, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I believe that the most important factor behind my personal success is consistency and respect. I’ve learned at a very young age treat everyone with the same respect. You never know who you are talking to So greet the janitor with the same respect at the CEO. Very important and it has take me places I never would’ve imagined.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Becoming a successful radio/club/travel DJ was not at all what I first imagined would be like. First obstacles I’ve personally had to overcome at the beginning I would say was belonging around the right people. None and I mean none can predict or even sense the correct people to be around especially in this industry. Being 16 and ignorant to a lot of this industry’s know how, it was very difficult figuring out whom to trust, whom to believe and even whom to look up to. One of the biggest things that’s been a key factor to my success was always being respectful. Building relationships took a lot of respectful moves such as greeting and treating everyone with the same respect. Afterall, Never knew if I would talking to someone that was a CEO or just getting started like myself. I found this to be a very important lesson because a lot of the people in this business do not take that very seriously. Most “big time” people I’ve came across come off very self centered and disrespectful only to have that temporary position which could taken away at any given moment.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I actually travel alot nowadays.. I play in some of the biggest most populated cities in the US and I do get asked this question very frequently. “Out of all the places you DJ what city or state is your favorite and why?” Well this might come to a surprise to a lot of people but my favorite all time city, place to visit is Seattle, Washington. Reason for that is simple. The views. I’ts not NY Miami Vegas LA Chicago or any of those. Seattle for one is so beautiful with the most amazing nature views. From the cleanest air to the highest mountains and clearest water Ive ever seen. Seattle is my definite pick. Along with a very jumping party scene well that’s the icing on the cake.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Along this journey Ive come across some amazing and talented people. However there is one person that I met as a kid that definitely made me see how far I could possibly go. His name is Luis “like dis” Mendoza. Back in the 90s in Dallas he was at the top of his game on radio and in all the clubs.
