We had the good fortune of connecting with Ronald Abraham Jr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ronald, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Check WI was developed with 3 aims in mind: 1) To reduce Caribbean Brain Drain.
2) To Provide a direct link for the world to access authentic Caribbean talent.
3) To educate users & visitors on latest trends in technology and provide them the opportunity to upskill in the most relevant & lucrative areas.

At almost a year in business, we are pleased to say that we are well on the way to realizing these aims and greatly impacting the digital advancement of our Caribbean community.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Check WI is an online Freelancer Marketplace, the first of its kind for the Caribbean region. We built this company with the aim to connect west Indian professionals with organizations and businesses around the globe in need of remote services.

As we’ve grown, we’ve identified further needs in the market and have sought out creative ways to fulfill those needs.
We have currently just launched our “E-Com Smash course” program where we coach and train ecommerce business owners for success in the online world (more info on this can be found at shop.checkwi.com).

In terms of how I got here, well that was a Rollercoaster ride by itself. I’ve lived in numerous countries, and dabbled with businesses and entrepreneurship since I was about 13 years old. It certainly is never a straight path when trying to make a business work, it’s actually maze with many dead ends, but you only ever get through it with perseverance, dedication, hard & smart work.

Some of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt:

1) Plan multiple steps ahead. It will save you much hassle in the long run.

2) If it can’t make sense on paper, chances are it can’t make sense (run your profit analysis based off worse case scenarios first. If it is sustainable, then you’ve got a good business)

3) Prioritize learning as much as you can. Life is one continuous lesson, but the more intentional you become about your mental growth, the more valuable you are to your business.

4) Life is negotiable. Never just accept things for what they are or because “that’s how it’s supposed to be”. You’ll be surprised just how much you can negotiate.

5) You’ve got to believe in yourself first. People don’t buy into your ideas as much as they buy into your confidence in them. Always remember that.

6) Your network is your networth. Build valuable, deeper connections with people.

7) Don’t chase Money, chase freedom.

8) the more value you can add, the more you can earn.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Although my journey is far from complete, I would not be at the stage I am today had it not been for the assistance of a lot of friends, family, mentors and book authors along the way. I want to recognize in particular two of my Business Partners, Daniel Fadelle, Jarrell “Ringtone” Fenton.

Ringtone took a chance on me in my DJ Career. He opened the door and gave me a foundation to build upon in the early 2010’s and had it not been for this foundation & opportunity, I would have never achieved what I have achieved on that front.

Daniel, my long time friend and the current co-founder/CFO of Check WI believed in me and I believed in him. Every entrepreneur knows what it’s like to have people doubt you, doubt your potential or the potential of your ideas. But Daniel’s elite vision, drive, positive outlook on life and shared passion for Caribbean development are just a few of the things that fueled the advancement of the company and continue to push us forward today.

3 Noteworthy Books that have helped me along the way:

Atomic Habits – James Clear
Hustle Harder, Hustle Smarter – Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson
Rich Dad, Poor Dad – Robert Kiyosaki
