We had the good fortune of connecting with Roxanne Wilmath and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Roxanne, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was the desire to create a one stop shop where people could enjoy themselves in a more intimate setting. I wanted to provide community, high end pampering, exceptional service and detailed results. I wanted a place of honesty and integrity between other stylists working together, a place where we could learn technique and etiquette. It was important to me that we have open conversations through monthly meetings to attain goals and brainstorm together to build connection and trust.

Something that was personally important to me about starting the business was my passion to create a persons highest potential image considering their daily life, career, comfort, presentation of self, paying attention to their body shape, height, face shape, portion from neck to chest, shoulders and more. I read body language very well and I was always fascinated about how getting dressed up really improved a persons posture, mood, personality, and how they saw themselves for that moment knowing it could be an everyday joyous feeling if they wanted it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always been an artist and had an eye for it. My father would get me character drawing books to recreate the images. I would freehand cartoons, looney toons and portraits along with lots of arts and crafts as my hobby. Being that my parents were artistic entrepreneurs, that definitely played a part in my upbringing. By 5 years old I saw a red carpet event on tv and thought “That’s what I want to do!” I wanted to make people glamorous and look their best. My mother was also an inspiration for style which helped my vision and creativity flow in thought of how to piece everything together for different looks.

Around 6 or 7 years old, my parents marriage took a hard turn and crumbled, not only our family but also the empire they had built together. This is where I started to develop in chaos and adapt to a more hostile environment. Eventually that led to my mother’s suicide and my father’s 20 year drug habit that he eventually passed from.

Due to the situation, I endured a long journey of therapy and found myself inquisitive about psychology. It brought me to make a decision later on that cosmetology was the way to bring both passions together making me a “hairapist” I decided I wanted to work with people from the inside out. To feel good you have to look good and when you look good, there’s a certain confidence that comes with it. You smile more, you’re more friendly, you’re more open and I also wanted to provide a safe space for people to vent their problems and speak back to them with love. It’s a way for me to spread my love and help people take that first step into a new self for whatever they are going through or anything new they’re stepping into.

As a professional I am here today doing what I love because I’m not afraid to take risks. I’m not afraid to lose. I’m not afraid of rejection(although it does hurt). I learn from every person I meet. I am creative in my customer service, the way I listen to people and read them. The questions I ask in my consultations are not generic questions. I ask people what their love language is, what they love about their hair/image, what they don’t like, and what would make them fall in love with their look along with their experience. I’m looking to provide my salon guests with a depth beyond them just wanting a service done or to get in and out. I want to really learn about them and speak their love language so that they not only feel heard but also fall in love with themself and their experience.

I know deep in my soul that the world is missing love. Love makes anything and everything possible. It’s the only emotion that truly drives people to success and happiness. There’s nothing like being in love whether it’s with your image, yourself as a person, relationships, or your career. Being in love makes life so much better and that’s what I’m here to do.. LOVE, and put it into anything I do.

Life after losing so much so soon became a domino effect. From hanging out with the wrong crowds, manic depression, and making horrible life decisions, really took a toll on me and slowed down the process to getting where I am now. I don’t regret anything and I don’t believe I’m supposed to be somewhere else. I understand now that we create the life we want based on how we feel about ourselves along with environment and education. It took me a good 20 years to overcome a lot of trauma and the last 6 years have been me working on my inner self, my goals and my business.

Now when things get hard, my mindset is “Ok, this ain’t nothing in comparison to what we’ve already dealt with.” And I kick, cry, scream, go to therapy, power through it but I always get through it. There’s no other choice. I know it’s temporary and I do everything in my power to educate myself about whatever hardship I’m enduring at the time.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We live in Florida, a number one spot to vacation and I just have to say, we are truly blessed to live in a place where the sun is always out, indoor and outdoor activities are available to us and we have a melting pot of culture providing us with a variety of food and entertainment. I would plan our days at the beach, a day pass to Marriott on Marco, the Ritz, or Hyatt for their lazy river pool. Jet skis, paddle boarding, boating, airboat rides, and sunsets for sure. I would also take them to painting with a twist, a rage room, a theater with recliners and the dinner train. As for night life, no one does it like Miami. Liv nightclub is an all time fav. Lunch at the strip club is unheard of anywhere else so we’d have to do that. I d bring them to el patio for a day party and dancing. I also love Coconuts in Ft. Lauderdale along with various art museums. We can’t forget to add a day at Bush Gardens or Disney!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
You know, in the beginning of my venture, I didn’t tell too many people or talk about it. I always knew I was meant for leadership but it was definitely a struggle to get there. I don’t know if people truly saw that in me because I didn’t get a lot of encouragement to start my own business. It’s something I wanted for myself for a long time. There are some things have really stuck with me that helped me provide more exquisite service.

I will say my father had always been so proud and mentioned that he knew I’d be big but that I had become more than he’d imagined. At the time I didn’t believe in myself the way he did but I definitely see what he was talking about now as he was also a successful entrepreneur and talked about positive thinking referencing Tony Robbin’s often. He always watched out for my interests and would buy me things to help let out that creativity.

My sister pointed out a bad habit of me answering the phone when I was with a client. She taught me that it didn’t matter if it’s a discounted service or family member, that it was important to always give my full undivided attention to each guest being provided services.

I engaged in a transformational therapy with Becky Sharon, one of the top coaches specializing in the brain. She helped me provide boundaries, integrity, standards, understanding of the people and what they want, self reflection, accountability and more. She helped me become more of who I am and connected me to a self security that I needed because I was always unsure if I was doing the right thing but I always knew what I wanted in order to do so. She brought me clarity in my actions and I needed that.

I also worked with another business owner as a stylist at a salon, Katia Raab. She taught me everything I know about upscale service, marketing, working on the business, training, and providing staff and guests with the utmost experience leading me to do the same for my business.

Some books I really love are Rich dad poor dad, Quit like a millionaire, Contagious, the Wim Hoff method, and The lean startup.
