We had the good fortune of connecting with Sabrina Gómez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sabrina, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I believe risk is what keeps us growing. It is the catalyst that pushes us out of our comfort zones and propels us towards our goals. Without the willingness to take risks, we would likely remain stuck in the same place, unable to reach our full potential.
A significant example of this in my life is the decision my family made to leave Venezuela and move to Costa Rica in search of a better future. This was a monumental risk, uprooting our lives and stepping into the unknown in hopes of finding greater opportunities and security. The move was challenging, but it was necessary for our growth and well-being.
Continuing this pattern of risk-taking, I made the bold decision to leave my family in Costa Rica and move to New York to pursue my dream of becoming an actor. Leaving behind the stability and safety of my home to face a life full of challenges was daunting. However, it was a necessary step to follow my passion and achieve my dreams. This move represented a leap of faith, trusting that the risks I took would lead me to success.
In my career as an actor, taking risks is an inherent part of the journey. The nature of our job is fraught with uncertainty. Every role we take on is a gamble, not just because of the unpredictable nature of the industry, but because each character we portray involves a deep dive into another person’s life. As actors, we hold these lives in our hands, exposing and sharing their stories with the world. Our choices as artists are a reflection of our willingness to take risks, to explore uncharted emotional territories, and to present these truths to our audience.
The sacrifices made along the way in pursuit of an acting career are prime examples of risk-taking. From the instability of freelance work to the emotional and physical demands of the craft, every step of the journey requires courage and a willingness to embrace the unknown. Uncertainty is risk, and it is through embracing this uncertainty that we grow, both as individuals and as artists.
In summary, risk-taking has been a fundamental part of my life and career. It has driven me to leave my comfort zones, make bold decisions, and pursue my dreams relentlessly. The journey is fraught with challenges, but it is these very challenges that lead to growth and success.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My journey from Venezuela to Costa Rica and ultimately to New York City reflects my dedication to the performing arts. My passion for music began at the age of four when I started vocal training, which laid the foundation for my future career.
I found a deep love for acting through musical theater. After completing my college education, I moved to New York City to further develop my skills at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. I made my off-off-Broadway debut as Veronica in Stephen Adly Guirgis’s play “The Motherfucker with the Hat” and became a regular performer in the monthly show “Living Radio” at the FRIGID Theater. I also performed in “Sketch of New York” at The Producers Club, which helped me establish my presence in the NYC theater scene.
As a singer, I have been fortunate to be a featured performer in the cabaret/improv show “On The Spot” and recently in the cabaret “Chasing Dreams.” My earlier performances in Costa Rica, including “Sonsax Colors” and “Pijamada de Princesa,” showcased my stage presence and vocal abilities.
Getting to where I am today has not been easy. Coming from a family of immigrants who left Venezuela for Costa Rica in search of a better future, I faced the challenge of leaving Costa Rica and moving to New York to pursue my dreams. Leaving my country, people, and family behind has been a difficult and emotional sacrifice. Yet, this decision has been necessary for my growth and career.
Stepping out of my comfort zone into a world full of instability and uncertainty has been challenging. The acting profession is demanding, and choosing to be an actor is a decision I must make every day. Despite the difficulties, the fulfillment and joy that come from performing make it all worthwhile.
The lessons I’ve learned include the importance of trusting the process and embracing resilience. My parents’ example of leaving their country to provide a better life for us has given me the strength to face and overcome challenges. Their resilience has been a guiding force, helping me navigate the ups and downs of my career.
I hope my journey can inspire others to persevere and follow their passions. My story is one of courage, sacrifice, and commitment to the arts. I continue to work hard to captivate audiences with my performances and contribute to the world of performing arts.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting the area and I wanted to show them the best time ever, I’d honestly just go for a walk around the city. I love walking, and it’s one of the best ways to experience New York City. Here’s a little itinerary for a week-long trip:
Day 1: Upper West Side
We’d start our adventure in the Upper West Side, one of my favorite parts of the city. We’d stroll through the charming streets, taking in the beautiful brownstones and vibrant atmosphere. We’d of course stop by Levain Bakery for their famous cookies!
Day 2: Central Park
We’d spend the next day exploring Central Park. From Strawberry Fields to the Bethesda Terrace, there’s so much to see. We’d pick up some snacks from Trader Joe’s and enjoy a picnic at Sheep Meadow. Afterward, we’d rent a rowboat at the Loeb Boathouse and enjoy a relaxing time on the lake.
Day 3: Midtown and Times Square
We’d make our way to Midtown, starting with breakfast at a classic New York diner. We’d visit iconic spots like Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and the New York Public Library. A highlight of the day would be visiting the Drama Book Shop, a treasure trove for theater lovers. In the evening, we’d experience the buzz of Times Square and soak in the vibrant atmosphere.
Day 4: Empire State Building and Broadway
We’d head to the Empire State Building for breathtaking views of the city. After soaking in the skyline, we’d enjoy a nice lunch and then explore the surrounding area, taking in the sights and sounds of Midtown.
Day 5: Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO
We’d take a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, soaking in the stunning views of the skyline. Once in DUMBO, we’d explore the waterfront and enjoy the picturesque views and charming streets.
Day 6: Williamsburg and Domino Park
We’d explore Williamsburg, known for its trendy shops, street art, and vibrant culture. We’d visit Domino Park, which offers beautiful views of the Manhattan skyline. For dinner, we’d go to my favorite restaurant, 12 Chairs, for a delicious meal and a cozy atmosphere.
Day 7: Battery Park and the Statue of Liberty
We’d end the week with a walk along Battery Park, my favorite spot in the city. Being close to the water, sitting in Battery Park by the water while watching the Statue of Liberty is the best way to end a day full of walking, eating delicious food, and having a fun time with a loved one.
Throughout the week, we’d find yummy places to eat all different kinds of food, making sure to enjoy every culinary delight the city has to offer. From food trucks to fine dining, the variety is endless. This itinerary would combine my love for walking with exploring the best of what New York City has to offer, ensuring a memorable visit.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my parents, who have been not only my rock but also my role models in life. They are strong, resilient, adaptable, and fierce, among many other admirable qualities. They have shown me the importance of perseverance, encouraging me to keep moving forward no matter how challenging the path may be. At the same time, they have taught me the value of being smart and reasonable, recognizing when something is detrimental to my mental or physical health and when it’s necessary to adjust my approach to make it work for me.
My parents have instilled in me the importance of doing things the right and moral way, following the rules, and maintaining integrity. They have always emphasized that achieving your goals and dreams through honest and ethical means is the most rewarding path, ensuring a clean conscience and true success.
From day one, they have supported me and my career, even though it is vastly different from their traditional lives. Despite the unconventional nature of my chosen path, they have stood by my side, offering guidance and support. They have always encouraged me to be kind to others and to navigate my journey with grace and respect.
My parents strike the perfect balance between allowing me the freedom to figure things out on my own and ensuring I always know I am never truly alone. They are there for me whenever I might need them, providing a sense of security and unwavering support.
In recognizing my success and the journey I am on, my parents deserve immense credit and recognition. Their love, guidance, and encouragement have been instrumental in shaping who I am and in helping me pursue my dreams with confidence and integrity.
