We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Swan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sara, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My husband and I started The Swan’s House back in 2018. I had quit my job in fashion after our son was born and Arthur had sold his company down in Brooklyn. We were both ready to start something new and we wanted to do it together. I had wanted to open a store since I was a kid, so Arthur said “Let’s do it!”. We started off small, with an etsy store and instagram and soon we began to blow up. The demand was overwhelming so we made our business plan and started looking for a brick and mortar space. We found the perfect spot in the heart of Tarrytown, where we live, and got to work on doing a full renovation of the space.

What should our readers know about your business?
We had only been open for five months when we were forced to close our doors because of the pandemic. It was the most overwhelmingly stressful time in our lives but we never stopped hustling, not for one second. We immediately got our business online, working through the night for two weeks to get our website launched. As soon as we were live, the orders started flooding in. We really pride ourselves on having a strong point of view, with a clear aesthetic, and people were hungry for what we had to offer. Our instagram following jumped to over 50,000 and soon after, we expanded our space to include a 2000 sq ft showroom behind our store.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Tarrytown is a wonderful little town, bustling with great stores, restaurants and of the oldest Music Halls in the country. Neighboring the historic village of Sleepy Hollow, it is full of historic sites and scenic walks. Some of our favorite spots to visit include Horsefeathers Restaurant, Pretty Funny Vintage, Trilogy Consignment, Transom Books, Basque Restaurant and Beekman Ale House. Follow the gorgeous Aquaduct Trail north or pop in to the Old Dutch Church cemetery where, if you’re lucky, you might just see the Headless Horseman roaming the grounds.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband Arthur absolutely deserves the credit for giving me the courage and belief that I could do this. Giving up our corporate careers, while we had a young son and a fresh mortgage was a daunting step but his support and encouragement gave me the strength to take that huge risk, and make the leap.
