We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Galvan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
A lot of people do not know that I have been a nature-inspired homeschool parent for the past 4 years and a music therapist who specializes working with neurodivergent children for 15 plus years.
MUSICA WITH SARAH was inspired by all my years of education, research and experience as a parent and therapist. I follow a child centered approach and created this program and space to welcome families of all backgrounds and abilities.
I have also been asked if I am Hispanic and yes, I am! I am a proud first generation daughter of immigrant parents from Colombia and El Salvador. I was born and raised in NY where the arts, culture and diversity are celebrated.
I am the first in my family to have graduated from college as well. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Masters degree in Music Therapy from New York University (NYU).
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
MUSICA WITH SARAH is a sensory-friendly, nature-based, inclusive bilingual music class for all! Children of all ages join with their caregivers to explore, create music & practice kindness with one another and the amazing animals in our local farm settings. MUSICA started with the intention to help support local farmers, expose children to the joys of play and guide caregivers to let go of their worries and see the world through their child’s eyes within the music and play.
What sets MUSICA apart from other programs is that it is created by a music therapist, mother and educator. Every part of the class has a developmentally appropriate purpose. Classes are influenced by a structured child led approach to encourage independence, self-expression and sensorial exploration from the child. It is a personalized experience where every registered child receives a bucket with their name on it filled with a variety of instruments and props. We sing songs in Spanish and English but you do not need to know Spanish to join a class. We embrace music as our universal language and celebrate the beautiful community we’ve become.
MUSICA WITH SARAH is an inclusive class where we gather to meet new friends, sing, dance, learn and play. The music itself is never interrupted nor amplified with a microphone due to being mindful of noise sensitivities and keeping it a grounding and non performative experience. Every class grants families entrance into the petting zoo at the farm where they are able to pet and feed the animals.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would first take them to the farms I have the pleasure of hosting MUSICA WITH SARAH classes! We would head to Marando Farms & Ranch and order a smoothie from Zen Juice Bar, walk around their organic market and visit the rescue animals in their petting zoo. We would also visit Family Horse Academy for a picnic under their shady Poinciana tree and do some horseback riding with the sweetest horses.
GRAMPS in Wynwood holds a special place in my heart since it’s where I performed my first gig in my previous band “The Bows and Ties”, celebrated my engagement and then got married there. We would be sure to grab a slice at Pizza Tropical there as well.
No visit to Florida would be complete without a day at the beach of course! I love Hollywood beach, their boardwalk and all their restaurants and shops.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this Shoutout interview to my daughter. She inspires me on a daily basis to be a better person and help spread joy. She is truly the kindest and most empathetic person I know.
