Meet Emma Batchelder | Creative Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Emma Batchelder and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emma, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
As the age old saying goes, “without risk, there is no reward”! Taking risks has been something I have done often in my life, however I am not necessarily a rash person. I do take time to think things through carefully and methodically before making big decisions, but often I have been known to just bite the bullet and go for it. When I was in my very early twenties I was in the south of France with my two best girlfriends, found out about the world of crewing on super yachts, and decided to go do that instead of starting my newly accepted job at an Ad Agency in London. Granted I was young and probably somewhat foolish, but it turned out to be an amazing experience and one that I stuck with for seven years working my way up to a Chief Stewadded position on yachts as big as 230ft. I learnt so much about the luxury hospitality industry from my career on yachts and that knowledge proves invaluable all the time still. After my seven year stint on yachts I knew I desperately wanted to live in America – I’m South African by birth and hold a SA and European passport, not exactly an easy feat to immigrate to the USA. But still, I took a massive risk, spent a lot of money on legal and application fees and hustled HARD to get a visa, which thankfully I did. I moved to Florida permanently in 2014. By 2016 I had my green card after persisting with my then employer to help me get that next round of crazy paperwork submitted as quickly as possible. I’ve moved all over the world, taken jobs, given up jobs, done tons of crazy things that were absolutely risky, but I have to say they have always paid off for me. I don’t know if that makes me smart or just plain lucky, but I am very grateful it has lead me to this point in my life and career. In 2020 I decided to take my most recent risk and launch my own company called Inyani Creative. It’s scary putting yourself out there for the world to see! ‘Inyani’ means ‘authentic’ in the Xhosa language of Southern Africa. My roots are a very big part of who I am, and my upbringing shaped me as a person so I wanted to incorporate that in my companies name somehow. We are a small creative studio that takes on clients on either a permanent or freelance basis to help them with creative direction, branding, marketing, interior design/decor, photography, styling, graphic design and social media. The initial response has been overwhelming and I’m looking forward to expanding and growing this business over the coming years.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Do what you love, always! I love being a creative and busy, and I take great pride in everything I do. I wouldn’t say it was easy at all getting to where I am now, but hard work and perseverance are always the key in life, and there really is nothing more to it. Do your job and do it well; show up (early), work hard, be better than everyone else, go the extra mile, and do it all with a smile on your face. I guarantee people will be drawn to that energy and you will be a success.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
As a Miami resident and their Marketing Director, I would obviously say Joia Beach. We truly are the cool, new kid on the block and with outdoor dining being the only option thanks to COVID-19, we are the place to dine at due to the fact that the entire space is outdoors. The restaurant sits on a private beach on Watson Island underneath a huge palapa. We have sweeping views of Biscayne Bay and Downtown Miami/Edgewater. The food and the ambiance are both out of this world and not like anything else that exists here — not just in Miami but in the USA. It is Mykonos meets Tulum, so since no one can travel and we are all eating outdoors, Joia Beach is truly the answer. On a “normal” day without considering pandemic restrictions, my favorite spots in Miami are definitely The Standard for the pool and sunset/drinks, Boia De for dinner, anything the Bar Lab guys do – so Broken Shaker, 27 Restaurant, Balloo and their newest baby which I can’t wait for, Margot Natural Wine Bar. I’m also a big pizza person so Lucali and Stanzione 87 win that category for sure.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My friend and business partner Memphis Garrett. Memphis and I met back in 2015 in Fort Lauderdale. He comes from a long line of amazing hospitality businesses and has experience everywhere from LA to Miami. Additionally he himself owns some awesome spots in Fort Lauderdale such as ‘The Poke House’ and ‘JB&C (Juice Bar & Cafe)’. Memphis reached out to me to bring me onboard as the Director of Marketing at a new project in Miami called Joia Beach where he is the Director of Operations. It is the first time we have worked together this closely and we have a great working synergy. We push each other to think bigger and do better always – and The Poke House was actually my first client permanently onboarded with Inyani Creative, as we handle their creative direction, branding, social media, graphic design etc. So I would have to say Memphis deserves my shout out for sure. We have a few tricks up our sleeve in the future including a Greek restaurant concept of our own called Ya Mas! Taverna with our third partner Dominique Scalise from Chicago, so I’m looking forward to many more years of working on projects together.
