We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Monares and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I first realized I wanted to become a makeup artist, it came with the knowledge that I would most likely be building my own business and freelancing. I honestly put little thought to it at first, just pure emotion. This is what I wanted to do and who I wanted to be, so it was already done, in my head.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a makeup artist based out of Los Angeles and by far, one of my favorite parts of the job is interacting with clients. I love getting to know them and their style- it makes the end product much more rewarding.

To be where I am today is thanks to my parents and the education I have in my craft. It definitely wasn’t easy coming out of school and into a pandemic, but going through that taught me that as long as you’re kind, determined, and you work hard- good things will come to you. One of the biggest standards I have for my business is treating people fairly and with kindness.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite thing about Los Angeles is it’s diversity so I would want to show them as much as possible. I love the LGBT+ clubs in WeHo and the art museums in downtown LA, those are definite highlights for me. As for food, I’m a big fan of sushi so I would take them to a few spots I know of in Koreatown.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom and dad, Karen and Gabriel, probably supported me in the beginning more than they should have. I also receive undying encouragement from my sister, Gabriela, close friends and my girlfriend, Cece. Lastly, I would love to acknowledge my mentor, Olaf Derlig. It has been an absolute pleasure learning from one of the kindest men I’ve met and one of the best in the industry. Thank you, all.
