We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Peguero and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
Creativity and passion. Embracing originality, and imaginative expression in what I create. Pursuing my artistic projects with enthusiasm, dedication, and love for my craft.
To make people stop and dream is what matters most to me in my art career.
In a world filled with constant noise, pain and distractions, art that invites people to pause and dream offers a much-needed escape. My creations can provide a moment of respite from the stresses of daily life, allowing individuals to immerse themselves in a world of colors, imagination and possibility.
Making people stop and dream through art allows me, in a way, to touch hearts, stimulate imaginations, and inspire positive change.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is an explosion of colors! I am often told that the way I mix colors, sets me apart from others. When someone tells me they recognize my paintings without looking at the artist’s name, that always fills me with pride and joy.
My journey began when I started studying Interior Design at the university in Santiago, Dominican Republic at the age of 18. I visited a friend’s parents’ house and they had many paintings with lots of happy colors that I felt in love with. I said to myself: I want to paint like that!
I started to paint a short time after that day but I took a long break due to lack of time with my studies in the university. Then I moved to Paris, France to learn French and study Fashion Illustration. After that I moved to Denmark (where I have living for more than 30 years). When my 3 children grew up I started painting everyday, and here I am now, painting by curiosity. Attracted by bold colors and the different mediums to create.
I rarely know beforehand how the new artwork will shape and develop. It is exciting to stand in front of a white canvas. This high degree of unpredictability and impulse fascinates me and brings energy & dynamics into my art.
My journey as an artist has been a fun road. I am self-taught, and it has been learning by doing. Must of times, learning the hard way. Making huge mistakes, discovering new methods, mixing different mediums. I always mention that I have a weakness for gold wich I use in different materials and structures; almost becoming a trademark in all my paintings.
The human form and face are the most important elements in my paintings. The figure dominates the work and is depicted as a shadow, ghost, aura, or energy form. Sometimes anonymous, other times more figurative.
I create my paintings across multiple genres with a constant desire to try new techniques and approaches. I work with a wide palette of materials /tools such as acrylic paint, pencils, charcoal, oil pastels, crayons on canvas and paper.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Denmark now but would love to answer this question thinking that I am in The Dominican Republic (where I just came back from 1 week vacation trip)
I would definitely love to recommend the city of La Romana. Go for a walk in Altos de Chavón, a replica 16th century Mediterranean village. The village is a cultural center for residents, tourists, and working artists from all over the world. Active studios for artists of every medium from pottery to weaving, silk screening, and everything in between line the cobblestone streets alongside shops and boutiques showcasing their unique creations.
I would tell my friend not to miss a hole day sailing tour with Areito Sailing to Catalina or Saona Island. Diving in the crystal clear waters of the turquoise Caribbean Sea, a super delicious lunch on the sailboat,,, I promise, it is an unforgetable tour.
Watch an outstanding sunset at Playa Bayahibe or Playa Dominicus.
Try the local beer Presidente and “pescado frito con tostones” (a hole fried fish and plantain fries) at the beach in one of the small local restaurants.
Dominican people are generally warm, friendly, direct, and eager to speak about their families.
Dominicans pride themselves in offering outstanding customer service to the visitors to this popular Caribbean destination.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I could go on forever with a list of emerging artists that have lifted me up, helped, and inspired me in the last 3 years!
I would have to say that my Instagram tribe/community deserves the most thanks and love for all their support.
We have created quite a special community over the years that I would say has inspired us all at some point and in some way. We are a huge family. Always there for each other,
