We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Ross and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
The end goal is to not only influence but to change the way mental health is viewed culturally, medically, and socially. Mental health is not separate from the other parts of a person. It both influences and is impacted by the world around us and cannot be treated in isolation. If a chain in the link is broken, the entire chain is impacted. Ultimately, I want to be a part of a team that helps to heal the whole person.
What should our readers know about your business?
J.R. Counseling, LLC is a practice that emphasizes integrated care and houses a multidisciplinary team to accomplish that goal. We currently offer consulting, sex education services, retreats, professional training, mental health therapy, nutrition services, and trauma-informed yoga services. The clinic has a goal to make care accessible and holistic. We are welcoming to all communities, social justice advocates, and allied with the LGBTQIA community.
As a Black woman and business owner I have faced many challenges. Through it all, I have learned to trust myself throughout this process. In addition, I have a team that is strong, powerful, and dynamic in their skill and ability. I want the world to know that at J.R. Counseling you are seen, you are safe, you are whole, and you matter.
My faith and my family have been what has pushed and held me to keep striving forward.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend was visiting me, my first stop would be for food! I enjoy Yardhouse in Troy. The food is great. The drinks are poured well. The ambiance and staff have been great. I also really enjoy going to the museums and sports venues in Detroit. I think the city of Detroit is the highlight of visiting Michigan.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My story begins with the people who brought me into this world. My parents helped to create spaces for me and taught me how to see people with beneficence and compassion. My spirituality and beliefs have kept me grounded and connected. My sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, also gave me a great foundation and understanding of what it means to be mighty, resilient, dedicated, and everlasting. My mentors have been amazing, Sallie Foley, being one of the most influential in helping me to find confidence in building myself as a clinician and my practice. My three children have cheered me on, literally, every day and still do. They are amazing and the reason I thrive. My husband has been very encouraging and with me for the entire ride. I also fight for and believe in myself and that matters!
