We had the good fortune of connecting with Scharad Lightbourne and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Scharad, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had worked in corporate for almost 3 years but I was beginning to feel stuck as a creative. I wanted to try new ideas, explore new concepts and experiment with things that Id find inspiring. After I reached a stalemate with my job, I knew I had to venture out into the creative field on my own.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always loved art in some form. Music, Film, Visual Arts. As a youngling, I was always more interested in drawing and doodling and expressing myself.
When I became a photographer I took those same interests and put them into my work. I love capturing people and what makes them so interesting and I try to highlight that in my work. I’ve grown a lot as an artist and when I look back on my work then and my work now I can see tremendous growth.
The ironic thing is that if I didn’t lose a bet in college, I prob would have been an architect or full-time graphic designer. I lost a bet to a very good friend in college and over rock, paper, scissors at that. The bet was to choose which elective we would take. Intro to photography or Flash web design. I lost so I had to take the photography class.
Becoming a self-employed creative wasn’t easy, even to this day, there are still periods I go through where there is no inspiration or desire to work. It was hard some months wondering where my next booking was going to come. But through perseverance and will and the need to never stop creating I was able to build my business into a profitable one.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is a great question. I would take them to some of my favourite places to eat firstly (because I am a foodie) so we’d go to Social House for sushi, Drifters for seafood and Cafe Matisse for Italian.
My country has the best beaches in the world so we’d island-hop to Eleuthera, Abaco and Exuma to see what real beaches look like.
I’m a bit of a film buff and we boast one of the largest cineplexes in the Caribbean so we’d check out Fusion because their screens are Imax theatre screens.
I have my own studio so they would certainly have to check that out and meet my comical and exciting team.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Well my parents deserve a huge shoutout because my upbringing greatly contributed to the person I am today.
