We had the good fortune of connecting with Shalisa Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shalisa, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
There is something so fulfilling about turning your passion into purpose. In essence, it’s a calling. Being that creativity has always been one of my signature strengths, and makeup being a passion of mine, pursuing a career in makeup artistry was a no-brainer.
In doing so, I experience “flow.” Serving others, and making them feel beautiful leaves me energized, focused, challenged, and it’s very rewarding. It allows flexibility, work-life balance, and the ability to express myself freely.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
After working in the beauty industry for over 10 years, skin remains to be what I do best. I have a glowing reputation for creating signature, dewy, timeless and natural makeup looks— no matter the client’s skin tone or texture. I am confident that when someone sits in my chair, they will leave an enhanced, recognizable version of themselves. I love to customize beauty to the unique individual I am serving. When I service a client, I not only take into account their physical features, but also their signature style and what makes them uniquely beautiful. I believe that my PR background gives me an edge in picking up on social and trend cues, and understanding what my clients need.
I got to where I am today by staying true to myself, perfecting my craft and building a network of solid, faithful clientele. People book me for my talent, but remain because of my professionalism. I put my all into what I do.
I’ve learned so many lessons along the way about conducting a business, engaging others, personal branding and building relationships. One thing that remains true is it comes down to owning who you are, and the rest will follow. I firmly believe in the law of attraction, and that you attract what you allow, and who is designed for you. If you set a standard of excellence, you will continue to level up in your career. Be honest, have integrity, treat people well, stay consistent and set yourself apart, and the universe will reward you every time with whatever is meant for you to flourish and grow.
I want the world to know that I’m here, and this is only the beginning. I’ve always felt I was meant for big things, and nothing will get in the way of living my dreams. There is a plan for me, so watch me shine!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Milwaukee is at its best during the summertime. Festivals, live music, outdoor dining, fun on the lake etc. People from all over visit because of the easy, laid back nature, and fall in love with us because of our midwestern charm. When you visit Milwaukee, you’ll eat good, have fun and create lasting memories.
One of my favorite things to do is explore downtown. Start with Sunday brunch, and hop from place to place, and take it all in. There’s always interesting people to meet and things to see. We’re full of a lot of rich culture, you just have to know where to look!
Check out Crossroads Collective pr the Sherman Phoenix for a unique food hall experience. Visit the Art Museum for beautiful views of lake a Michigan. Stop by the Deer District to see the best in sports, and bar fun. Go to Summerfest, or one of our Ethnic festivals for a taste of culture and music. You’ll always have a good time!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out my sister, Shanee. She was always someone I looked up to when I was younger for her poise, style and strong sense of self. She has always nurtured my gifts and talents, and encouraged me to explore my creativity. As one of my first muses, she helped me realize my love for makeup and fashion, and encouraged me to become a freelance artist. She helped me form my LLC, purchased my domains for my website, and has always been a helping hand when I need it. My biggest client to date, Issa Rae, would not have happened without my sister. She drove me out of state, after I had surgery, to ensure that I wouldn’t miss out on the opportunity. I am forever grateful for her love, support and mentorship.
