We had the good fortune of connecting with Shani Nyelle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shani, how do you think about risk?
I am a very big risk taker. Anyone who knows me personally would be quick to say that I change my mind a lot and I am very free willed. If I hadn’t taken the risks that I’ve taken in my life so far, I would not be anywhere near where I am today. From dropping out of college, to quitting job after job, without any real or solid plan. In my head, all that really matters is what my goals are in life and what I need to do for myself in that moment to get closer to those goals. As long as you truly believe in yourself and your path, all of the extra noise is kind of irrelevant. You just have to know what you want and go after it, no matter who or what gets in your way. Life is all about risks and if you’re scared to take those risks, you may never get to change your situation.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
What sets me apart from others is, I’m never trying to be like everyone else or please others. I do everything with authenticity and I just do or create what I like. I’m most proud of myself for never settling for anything in life and going after my goals and career dreams. I’m really excited for everyone to see what I have in store for my clothing brand and I’m excited to watch my business grow and succeed. I am working towards becoming a well known fashion stylist and designer. I honestly got myself to where I am now just by being myself and putting my work and goals out there. I’m learning everyday and keeping my mind focused on what I really want out of life. It’s not easy to build a career in fashion or in business, but I put myself in spaces where I can connect and work with people who have the same or similar interests as me. Along the way, I’ve learned that everyone is not always genuinely there for you the way you might think they are. There’s always going to be people who try to distract or deter you from your goals, especially when you are on to a greater path. The most important thing is to really just know who you are and stay true to yourself. Another lesson I’ve learned so far is, it’s ok to ask for help. I’m a very stubborn person and I like to just figure things out on my own, but in my case that’s not always the best thing to do. As little or as big as the problem is, if you need help, you should ask for it. As far as my brand INAHS, I want everyone to stay tuned and anticipate amazing streetwear and womenswear pieces. Also, I’m working on building my wardrobe stylist portfolio so for any styling needs, I’m your girl!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in NYC, so you can really make fun out of anything, anywhere. When my friends come to town we usually go out to the city to “site see” and take a million photos. Going out to eat is always on the list too. My favorite restaurants right now are Copellia and Thai Villa. Other than that, going out for drinks is always fun or I personally like to stay in and have fun at home.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out anyone who has ever supported anything that I do or put out into the world. Anyone who has ever shared my content, referred my work, or given me words of encouragement or admiration. Especially those who have trusted me to style or model for them because exposure is so important and necessary. Next comes my family. Literally I would not be anywhere without them and their guidance and support. I want to shout out Tawanna (@madisonshouseofstyle) for really helping me get things rolling with my clothing brand and my fashion styling. Lastly, I want to shout out Wes (@ceo_brand_faithruby) because he is someone who really took a chance on me and believes in me and my potential. He’s given me chances to showcase my work and learn in this industry and I will forever be grateful for that.
