We had the good fortune of connecting with Shantel Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shantel, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thoughts behind my business is that I want all Women, Men and Children to feel confident and to standout in my clothing. Also I want to continue designing for all shapes and sizes because I know that everyone likes clothes. Another thing is clothes are so hard to find in stores. As a matter of fact Mom used to buy all of my clothes and I wear them all, But I wanted to have the clothes that I really like under my belt so that’s why I was moved to start my own clothing line back In October of 2012.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from my career is that my designs are ones that you will never see in walk-in stores. Although that is my goal is to get them into a store which is Macy’s and that’s the store I work in, I am a sales associate there. I think when I get my clothing line in Macy’s people will know that my clothes are designed with lots of color and they are unique. I am proud that I am getting more and more models that wants to work with me and hitting me up to promote my brand. Also I am working with a Fashion Designer to help promote her brand as well. And I am getting more clients so I am proud of that. Also I have been making major sales this year and last year. No nothing is easy it took work and time. But I still got it done. Everything takes time and patience. The lessons I have learned is that don’t force people to buy from you right away, let them buy when they are good and ready. So that’s what I have been doing. I want the world to know that my work is one of a kind and you will not find my clothes in regular walk-in stores. Although I take my collections to a Consignment shop. I have gotten some sales from there as well. So yes I want the world that I don’t leave anyone out as far as shapes and sizes. Everyone can wear my designs.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
My favorite place that I went to was Hawaii. When I went with my family I had the time of my life. The food was delicious. The scenes were beyond beautiful. So I will definitely take a friend to Hawaii. I would say I will checkout all the cities in Hawaii all though I didn’t while I was there. But one spot I loved was Honolulu because of the beaches. But yes me and my friend will be definitely checking out Fashion Week In Hawaii. It’s fun to view different kinds of designs in different states.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Dedication goes out to my fellow Model Guety Lazzare because she is always willing to model my latest collections and she always makes them come to life. Also she is also my Fashion Buyer. Also she is an Entrepreneur of her own business as well, she is the CEO of her business called SOBEH Inc. Let me tell you a little about it, this organization is to help people back in her hometown which is Haiti to raise money so they are able to buy what they need which are school supplies, food, clothing and etc. Also I have showcased in her Fashion Show last year it was entitled Sobeh Second Fundraising Gala Fashion Show Affair. Also I was awarded for my latest designs, that was my first award that I have ever gotten as a Fashion Designer. You know what they say hard work pays off. And it paid off through that award that I have received. This year I am planning on showcasing in her show again. It’s gonna be either late July or August. But due to circumstances with Covid 19 I am still preparing my designs for her show, But I can say is that I deeply appreciated the award and being recognized for my hard work.
