We had the good fortune of connecting with Shayna Tabaryai and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shayna, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
If I’m being honest, my parents told me that being an artist was not a realistic career choice. Since I was a rebellious child, I was driven to find my way around it. From a young age, I loved to draw, paint and get my hands on anything that allowed me to express myself. As technology was advancing, I became more tech savvy and I realized that I can turn my passion into a career. From that moment on, I decided I wanted to get my degree in Graphic Design. After graduating, my parents became my biggest support system and before I knew it, I landed my dream job working as a Graphic Designer for Fashion Nova. I already knew I could achieve anything I set my mind to and this was only the beginning for my creative career.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I feel really blessed to have started my career with a brand who started social media marketing and in such a fast-paced environment. I was given so much exposure and it gave me enough confidence for working in such a competitive industry. If you have a business idea or you’re someone that needs to work directly with a creative to put all the pieces together, then you need to connect with Design Haus LA. My creative platform allows your brand to evolve fast and tap into new digital strategies including: graphic design, branding, web-design, email marketing and social media marketing. That being said, it’s really important to have a designer that can adapt to certain brand aesthetics and that has been my biggest success. I’ve developed interpersonal relationships with my clients and their brands and it’s definitely a passion to make their vision come to life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In a perfect world (pre-pandemic) I would start the day out by heading to my favorite spot for coffee, La Colombe and then have lunch at Croft Alley and roam the streets of classic Melrose to show the culture of the city. Then at night definitely hit the scene of Santa Monica/Venice area to grab a drink and have dinner. Obviously LA has the most spots for bloggers, influencers and huge foodies, but if we want good sushi and I mean really good sushi, Shibuya in Calabasas is my go-to for the most authentic fish you’ve ever had. It’s definitely not a typical blogger vibe, but more of a hole in the wall, if you know, you know kind of restaurant. We would definitely have to make a stop at in-n-out especially for anyone coming from the East Coast and maybe a late night taco truck. There’s always exciting new places to see in LA, but a road trip to Joshua Tree or Palm Springs might be on the itinerary depending on the weather.
What’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
I spent three years working for the largest fast-fashion brand, Fashion Nova and I was terrified to leave my comfort zone. My journey began there in a start-up environment and I wouldn’t trade my experience for anything, but I kept asking myself, what’s next? Obviously a typical corporate job isn’t ideal for any artist, but I knew it was time for a change. I was scared to embark on this new journey, and I didn’t want to leave my team, who up until today I still consider family. However, I realized I needed to evolve as a designer and entrepreneur and take the next step in my career with starting my own digital marketing agency: Design Haus LA. That’s right, risk-taking at it’s finest, especially in the beginning of 2020, pre-pandemic. I definitely was in for a ride, but I’ve invested in the right relationships and I let my clients grow organically. I learned the value of hard work to get what you want and I’m up for the challenge.
