We had the good fortune of connecting with Shevvy Malibu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shevvy Malibu, how do you think about risk?
Wow, I love this question! Personally, I think risk is an essential ingredient if you plan to live a life that leaves a mark. Everything that’s worth a lot, risks a lot. Whether that be money, security, time, approival from your loved ones… to live an exceptional life, you have to risk comfort.

When I was younger and just starting out in the corporate world, I remember being nervous about an being questioned on my skills and abilities during interviews and my mom gave me advice that I’ve taken with me throughout my life. She told me “if you want it, just say yes and figure it out later”

And I took that literally and ran with it…when presented with opportunities that I really want I say yes and figure it out during the process, even if it’s risky. Has it worked out everytime, No…but enough to keep me going.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started kind of by accident. I wanted to be an actress and was professionally trained dancer. I never thougt of being anything else. I had a car accident in my early 20’s that basically erased all that. And I had never bothered to want anything else, I thought you know, this is my talent, this is my path. When I had the accident, I thought well I guess I better just get a real job and start raising my family this is my new life, I tried to ignore the desire for something more.

When I had my youngest son, I was a SAHM for the fiurst time and he was diagnosed at an early age with Austism spectrum Disorder.. To combat the loneliness and frustration and even the triumphs, I started blogging about it. Not just parenthood but just life as a woman.. I thought of it more like a public journal of sorts. and from that little blog was born the BOSSY! brand. The magazine, the events, the courses everything came from me just wanting to connect with other women and let them know we all have similar journeys and they weren’t alone. To empower them with acceptance and choices.

Now the English-Brown Winery brand is a partnership with my serial entrepreneur mom, Gigi Brown. It’s an extension of Gigi’s Music Cafe another family business. We are a micro-winery and wine bar, where we actually make handcrafted small batches of wine right here in Hollywood, FL. Some people think it’s a big departure from my lifestyle brand BOSSY! but both businesses allow me to connect, entertain, educate and interact with my community and that’s my ultimate goal

Luxe Lifestyle Group is so much fun that I almost forget it’s a business! We (my partner Lacey Byrd) and I saw a need for truly lavish & upscale lifestyle events catering specifically to black women and their interests and the response has ben overwhelmingly positive.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My interests tend to be allover the spectrum so that would be crazy week. I am a water baby so any excuse to be in or even near somebody’s water..I’m there. So there’s gonna be some beach days in there! I recently discovered the The Dunns Josephine this beautiful black-owned hotel so I’d have to recommend staying there for a night or two. The Good Time Hotel is alo my new favorite for daycations! The have pool parties daily! Axe throwing in Hollywood and yoga on the beach are faves. I’m a foodie but my taste is eclectic so from brunch at The Island Fusion Grill to lunch and The Krazy Vegan and dinner and a show at Gigi’s Music Cafe.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I mean I’m sure this sounds cliche but I could do nothing without my family, especially my parents. Having a family full of business owners, entrepreneurs and creatives gives me a space and a support system that is so important to being able to do the work I do.
