We had the good fortune of connecting with Skylar Buchanan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Skylar, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
First and foremost, and most importantly, I am inspired by my culture. Black culture, music, hair, entertainment, and other black artists who take their craft and business serious. In a lot of cases, black artists and artwork are not highlighted in specific spaces. Especially when our art is not within a popular niche. It takes a lot to stay true to your art style when it may not get the recognition it deserves.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Here at Decor Ones, LLC, I create custom handmade rugs and wall art. When creating my own art, first and foremost, and most importantly, I am inspired by my culture. Black culture, music, hair, entertainment, and other black artists. Besides using my creative freedom, I also take on custom designs from customers that trust me to help bring their ideas to life.

With owning my own business, Decor Ones, LLC, I have learned that a large part is mental and emotional strength. Entrepreneurship comes with a lot of highs and lows. I’ve had multiple moments questioning if I should keep going. These feelings tend to creep into the back of my mind when sales and interest are low. Like most creatives, I take a lot of pride in my work and when the engagement is low, I tend to feel like my work isn’t appreciated. Each time this occurs I make the choice to stay persistent, because I know my worth and the quality of my craft. I take solace that growth at any rate is a step in the right direction. Just have to keep pushing forward!

Another important lesson that being a business owner has taught me, was to always look for ways to either create something new or find a way to differentiate yourself from your competitors. Once you have perfected your craft, look at what other people in your industry are doing and then use your creativity to try something new that you haven’t seen yet.

Lastly, as an artist, I always value staying committed to my personal style when it comes to creating my own designs. In a lot of cases, black artists and artwork are not highlighted in specific spaces. Especially when our art is not within a popular niche. It takes a lot to stay true to your art style when it may not get the recognition it deserves.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When coming to visit, first things first, we are going to find a great brunch or happy hour spot. The DMV has many places to choose from, so we would have multiple options. Next, we would check to see which music artists are in town, and go to a concert. I love seeing R&B artists live in concert, seeing their vocal abilities in person always amazes me. Other than that we would have a group game night, whether it’s inside the house, bowling, Top Golf, laser tag, whatever! Competition is a great way to grow bonds and have a day/night full of laughter. And lastly, there are quite a few wineries in the DMV area as well, so going out to a vineyard, to enjoy some wine, food, and music would be a nice way to relax and chill out for the night.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shoutout my husband, my mother, my grandmother, and my son. My CORE group supports me with EVERYTHING that I do and through every step of my journey.
