We had the good fortune of connecting with Sofia Lavarello and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sofia, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
My entire career has been built on taking risks. As the days go by and I grow older, I’ve come to believe that it’s those risks that propel us forward. One phrase I often find myself repeating is that the magic happens outside of your comfort zone. For me, staying in the comfort zone isn’t an option—it feels like stagnation. That’s why I constantly push myself to take new risks.
Of course, I’m afraid of taking risks; who isn’t? But I’m even more afraid of staying in one place, missing out on the opportunity to explore what the future holds. Throughout my career, I’ve always chosen to take risks. I’ve left behind positions where I was thriving to venture into the unknown. It’s terrifying, but I know that if I hadn’t made those leaps, I’d still be stuck in the same place.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Getting to where I am today was anything but easy. First, I had to confront my own biases about what I wanted and how I wanted to achieve it. I always knew I wanted to be a journalist in the sports world, but when I started, there were very few women in the field. My first job on a sports television program was with an all-male team. The challenge wasn’t them—it was me. I had to develop my own voice and prove why I belonged there.
One of the toughest decisions I made was leaving a job where I felt comfortable to pursue new opportunities. It felt like jumping into the unknown, but I knew what I wanted, even if I wasn’t sure how to get there. Moving to another country made things even more challenging. No one knew me or my work, and I had to start from scratch, proving to everyone that I was capable of achieving what I had set out to do.
When the long-awaited opportunity with FIFA finally came, the biggest challenge was proving that I was ready for it. I met that challenge head-on, and I’m eager for the next opportunities to come!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I could take my friends anywhere, it would be to Argentina, my homeland. I’d introduce them to the best local spots to eat, take them to a theater show on Calle Corrientes, and if it’s winter, we’d ski in Mendoza. In summer, we’d explore the mountains in the province of Salta. I’d show them just how breathtaking Argentina truly is.
To me, the most special places are the ones filled with cherished memories—the places where the experiences were so unforgettable that you long to return. The aromas, the food, the people—they all leave an indelible mark. For me, that place is Argentina.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I can’t pinpoint just one person who helped shape my career because, in truth, there were many. Each person who trained me—whether they were executive producers, supportive mentors, or even challenging bosses—left their mark on me. From everyone, I took away something valuable—lessons I wanted to carry forward, and others I knew I didn’t want to repeat. Working in an environment where I was often the youngest and least experienced was a blessing in disguise. It allowed me to absorb knowledge from those around me. Every boss I had, in one way or another, contributed to my growth and helped me move forward in my career.
