We had the good fortune of connecting with Sorraya Guillaume and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sorraya, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
It’s been interesting to see how my perception and experience of work-life balance has evolved over the course of my life. In the early stages of my career, as a young twenty-something, it was known that you should arrive at the office before your boss and leave after they did. Demonstrating dedication and enthusiasm for work was highly valued. The occaisonal working late at the office didn’t affect me much because once I left, my personal time was my personal time. Work hard, play hard, righ?

However, as I progressed to the mid-level of my career, I also embraced the role of a spouse and a parent, with a loving husband and two kids. At this point, work-life balance took on an entirely different meaning. It became crucial not only to showcase my dedication to my career and desire for promotion at work, but also to make time for my family at home. The shift in priorities was evident right away. I could no longer afford to stay beyond 5:01 pm in the office. I had to rush to pick up my daughters from daycare to avoid penalties and reprimands. Work followed me home, where I would wrap up tasks late in the evening after putting my daughters to bed. The boundaries between work and personal life had blurred, and I wondered where the balance had gone.

Then, the pandemic struck, and remote work became the new norm. This was something I had longed for—an escape from the rush and the flexibility of working from the comfort of my own home. Yet, even with older children, I found myself juggling my full-time work schedule and my responsibilities as a full-time mom. Zoom calls intermingled with taking my daughters to dance and gymnastics, and emails and work calls were fielded while picking them up. The lines between work and personal life became even more hazy.

Finally, I took the leap and started my own business, reclaiming that sense of balance on my own terms. This time, I could establish clear boundaries. I dedicated focused time to my family when I was with them, and I could shift my attention to my business when necessary. Starting my own business not only rekindled my creativity but also allowed me to devote time to nurturing both my personal and professional aspirations. I am now able to experience the joy of being fully present in my family’s life while pursuing my entrepreneurial ambitions, and it has brought a newfound harmony to my work-life balance.

My personal journey began in the vibrant city of Miami, Florida, where I was raised by Haitian parents amidst a rich tapestry of cultural diversity. It was in this melting pot of influences that I discovered my affinity for the theatre arts. My love for creativity and artistic expression blossomed, fueling my desire to pursue a path that would allow me to shape and transform spaces. My father ventured into the realm of General Contracting, immersing himself in the refurbishment and renovation of homes. Meanwhile, my brother embarked on his journey as an architect, unveiling the intricacies and possibilities of architectural design. Listening to their stories and experiences within the industry, I felt a magnetic pull towards the world of design.
However, I chose to pursue Advertising and Psychology during my college years, carving a path that allowed me to explore the depths of human behavior and the power of effective communication. For over 15 years, I honed my skills in the marketing and advertising realm, collaborating closely with creative teams to develop impactful campaigns that resonated with audiences. It was during this time that I realized the profound impact of well-designed spaces as a vital component of effective communication.
Driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge and a desire to fully immerse myself in the world of design, I took a leap of faith and earned a certificate in Interior Design from the University of Miami. This transformative experience not only equipped me with technical expertise but also deepened my understanding of the psychology behind space planning. I developed a keen eye for detail and an unwavering dedication to creating functional, organized, and visually stunning interiors that seamlessly align with the unique lifestyles and aspirations of my clients.
My diverse background and multifaceted journey have bestowed upon me a unique perspective, allowing me to approach projects holistically from their inception to their meticulous completion. I possess the ability to blend creativity with a profound understanding of human psychology, crafting spaces that not only dazzle the senses but also effortlessly adapt to the ever-evolving needs of the inhabitants. With a thoughtful approach and meticulous attention to detail, I create interiors that transcend the ordinary, imbuing them with a harmonious fusion of aesthetics, functionality, and a deep sense of personal connection.
With every project I undertake, I strive to create transformative environments that not only reflect the individuality of my clients but also inspire and uplift the human spirit, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of those who experience them.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
1 – Beach Of course, you can’t come to Miami without going to the beach. I like to go to North Beach area away from the toursity South Beach. North Beach by 76th street and Collins. It’s great for families. There’s a small beach side playground with a large green space. Plus the beach is beautiful there. And, if you’re lucky, some days you’ll catch mini sandbars, which is great for small children.
2- Design District
This area has completely transformed in the past 4-5 years. High end shops and dining. It’s great for walking around, while enjoying the great weather.
3 – Take in a spa at Fontainebleu. At this spa you can really spend the entire day there. Services are great, plus the amenities allow you to enjoy the spa facility and the numerous pools they have at this resort.
4- The Grove also has great walk-ability for outdoor weather. There’s a new spot that just opened, along the bay. Open air lounging around and an afternoon drink. You can even chill on their stylish hammocks.

To eat, I’d recommend:
– Honey Uninhibited for brunch
– L’Atelier du Joel Robuchon in Design District for an unbelievable food experience
– Calista Taverna in Coral Gables for Greek
– Mignonette in Edgewater for Oysters
– House of Mac in Wynwood for casual comfort food
