We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Lopez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephanie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I love taking risks, they might not always be easy to make but I know that amazing things can happen when you just go for it! Personally, taking risks has helped me grow out of my comfort zone, especially when it has come to changing careers. Going full time with my business, A Design In Between, and not going back to bartending was a big risk financially but a risk I had to make for my future. I knew growing a business was not going to be easy but it was going to be worth it and most importantly say I took the risk of going after my dreams. Taking risks will leave you surprised at how much you are truly capable of. I think that if you strongly feel passionate about something it is worth taking risks for it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Nature is what inspires me to create! Mainly florals, botanicals, animals, soft and neutral palettes with the occasional pop of color. You will find me designing Seamless Patterns for fabrics and Brand Identity Art like logos, business cards, menus, and wall art, for brands. Two different design worlds that I love and had to bring together with A Design In Between! A Design In Between was an idea in college and as soon as I was done with school, I knew that I had to just go for it, start my own business, and learn along the way. Studying graphic design helped but I learned nothing about business in school. There was a lot of learning on my own that I had to do. I knew it was not going to be easy but being persistent helps! One thing I will love for the world to know about my brand is that A Design In Between crafts designs with the Earth in mind and encourages others to do the same when possible.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
It’s been a while since I have been out due to Covid but here are my usual spots that I truly enjoy in Miami. Beach on South Pointe Park Pier Rent Kayaks on Purdy Ave and kayak out to Pace Island! Check out Wynwood Wall Art Lunch at 1-800 Lucky Happy Hour or Dinner at Chotto Matte Miami Donuts at The Salty Donut Stop by Upper Buena Vista for food and drinks Broken Shaker for tasty craft cocktails and snacks. Out of Miami, but worth driving to Key Largo to go snorkeling at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I can cry thinking of how much support, encouragement, guidance, and love this person has shown me throughout the past 11 years. I want to dedicate my shoutout to my best friend and husband, Paul. Paul was the one that encouraged me to pursue art/graphic design as a career. Growing up, I always had the picture of the starving artist in my head so the idea of making it a career was always instantly dismissed. I remember going to college and studying dietetics which felt like the safe route to take and I loved the idea of helping people. However, a year into school it started to become a drag and Paul realized that I was genuinely not happy and not being true to myself. He was totally right! He pointed out that I spent most of my downtime drawing or editing images on Photoshop. That’s when it really clicked, I had to do what truly made me happy, I had to create art. I switched majors and never looked back! The best part is that I still get to help people by bringing their ideas to life through art! Paul’s guidance and encouragement have definitely helped me get to where I am today. I am beyond grateful and lucky to have a teammate like him!
