We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Straub and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephanie, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
Slow Down! I have always been a “go-getter” my whole life, working toward the next thing. I feel it has been something that has helped me be successful in building my business, however in the therapy room, it doesn’t work this way. My clients have taught me the importance of slowing down, being present and trusting the process. You really can’t rush it in therapy, or it just won’t work. It’s been amazing to witness the shifts that occur in these moments. So while on the business side of things I am still very intentional, I appreciate the opportunity to just be still and allow the therapy “magic” to happen.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am a psychotherapist and I run a small group practice in Syracuse, New York. What sets us apart from others is our relaxed and approachable nature. We really focus on creating a safe, “homey” space for clients to do some really challenging personal work in. As someone who works primarily with mothers I want to create an inviting space for postpartum moms to bring their babies with them as we want to remove as many barriers to treatment as possible. I’ve had lots of babies in my office and I love it! I’ve sat on the floor with my clients as we play with their babies as we do the therapy and it’s wonderful. I am proud of the growth of the practice in such a short amount of time. I did not anticipate bringing on new clinicians to my practice this early on, but the universe had other plans, and I’m grateful for it. It has not been easy, but it’s one of those things that I know is just “right”, in my mind, there is no doubt about that. Staying focused on the “why” behind my decisions has been what has helped me push through challenges. Knowing what was on the other side of each hurdle and keeping my eye on that has been very helpful when I get discouraged (which happens a lot when there is nowhere else to pass the buck to!) As cliche as it is, I have learned that you really CAN learn just about anything if you put your mind to it. I knew NOTHING about running a private practice business but I immersed myself in resources available to me and feel quite confident in running my business. I’m actually surprised by how much I enjoy the business of things too! But it all came from grit and determination. I had to seek out resources, books, mentors, podcasts, online courses, the list goes on and on and on. And now, I have colleagues coming to me for support as they open their own practices. I would say that authenticity and integrity make up the foundation of my “brand”. What you see is what you get, and what you are going to get are therapists who truly care, are willing to be real and raw when needed, and are always moving toward the things we value and doing what’s right.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Karen Kleiman is a therapist, author, trainer and an expert in the field of maternal mental health, which is my clinical specialty area. She has also recently become a personal mentor to me. I am so grateful for her support and guidance and encouragement both personally and professionally. I would 100% credit her as the inspiration for much of what I do
