We had the good fortune of connecting with Steven Bartley Rodrigo Burgos and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Steven Bartley, what do you attribute your success to?
Commitment to delivering a consistently high quality customer experience. We love sailing and being on the water, and we project that passion to our guests. We are equally excited to host experienced sailors and people who have never sailed before. In our own experience as guests of other tours and activities, we look for authentic and engaged hosts, and we hold ourselves to that same high standard.
What should our readers know about your business?
Both captains have strong multicultural backgrounds, previous professional careers spanning multinational corporations to startups, in management, marketing and consulting. Our respective professional careers were always coupled with a passion for and active, outdoor life, particularly linked to the ocean, and in recent years, increasingly focused on sailing.
We’ve completed hundreds of outings with friends, family and business associates for the past 20 years, which naturally evolved into private chartering which started 7 years ago as a limited, part-time hobby. More recently it has evolved into a full-fledged customer-oriented operation with additional offerings and more in-depth customer service to customize each outing to the guests’ needs and preferences. We like to say our offering is neither the most expensive nor the cheapest in the local South Florida market, but our reviews attest to the fact that we offer a top-quality, truly authentic and unique experience on Biscayne Bay. We love when our guests tell us “this was the highlight of our trip to Miami”…. That’s what we aim for!
We’ve learned to thread the needle between South Florida’s sometimes unpredictable climate to avoid an unpleasant experience, and find the right “window” and best route for a sailing tour. We’ve learned to explore and understand the kind of outing experienced sailors want versus boating “newbies”, or outings with kids versus adults only, all of which drives different tour plans. Developing a range of offerings of specific activities during the trip (snorkeling, SUP paddling or just hanging out) has also been fun for us and gratifying for our guests.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Miami has a lot to offer and, in the 20 plus years living here we have seen it grow from a beach, party and shopping place into a much more interesting, vibrant city, full of art, culture and other activities. We always recommend people to visit the Vizcaya Museum, the Perez Art Museum or the renewed Coconut Grove with its great cafes and restaurants. Key Biscayne has one of the best sunset spots in the area; you can enjoy it at The Cleat, in Bill Baggs park. Fairchild Tropical Gardens are a must and so are Wynwood, the Design District and Brickell. For someone staying a week, we encourage them to include Key Largo to get some taste of the Florida Keys. That is, if they do not hire us for one of our great 2 or 3 day private sailing tours, where we sail down to Key Largo and do lots of sailing, snorkeling reefs, paddleboarding, and stopping in some amazing places along the way.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Our wives, for backing us with our chartering endeavor, and tolerating our long absences during charters and many boat maintenance and upgrade projects.
