We had the good fortune of connecting with Tameca Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tameca, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Having been an employee for most of my life, I learn that accountability, discipline and consistency all play pivotal roles in being successful in my endeavors. It is those same work ethics and beliefs that allows me to become a successful travel and marketing business owner. It may sound cliche when someone says “when you’re a business owner, you work even harder than being an employee” but it holds truth. Because, having my own business is like having my own baby and I want to nurture, care for and see the full potential in which it can grow, so that dedication and desire for success will fuel me to work harder than ever to get that result. Another lesson I’ve learned is to be patient and kind to myself while on this journey. It is easy to get discourage when you do not see immediate results, but doing so will only take away focus, and open room for idle thoughts of wanting to give up, without first allowing time to take its course. Being excited every day and staying positive about my business create a better mindset and optimism.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a fulltime Accounts Payable Manager with a multi-million-dollar company. I manage a Team of 10 and have been an AP manager for the past 17 years. My background experience ranges from working in the mortgage industry to higher education, where I did 12 years, health insurance and currently Optical. My years of experience in a leadership role, has helped me to be successful at what, I am most proud of to date, which is being an Independent Travel Business owner of TravelFlyWire, through InteleTravel. I also have a second business which is part of a travel marketing company, where this side of my business allows me to empower others by sharing the same opportunity for them to also become travel business owners. Having 2 businesses, is hopefully, my ticket to an early retirement from being an employee. I enjoy my 9-5 employment, but the gratification that I get from my 2 businesses far supersedes those emotions.
Growing up in Jamaica, I never thought or had desires to be a business owner, I was taught like most to go to school, get an education and get a good job. So, I remember going into the banks, and saw how well dressed the bank tellers were, I developed the desire of wanting to work in an office of some sort. I have a bachelor’s degree in business administration, so after college I went right into working in accounting. However, after doing the same thing for so many years, I started to feel drained from being overworked, and felt as though I wanted to do something different. I started travelling a lot more, and through my love for travel I was introduced to becoming a Travel Business Owner. That transition was easy, because I was doing something that I love. Even if I wasn’t the person travelling, I lived vicariously through my clients and with that excitement I am able to provide them with the best services. Then when I learnt how much I could earn residually from my other business, that added an extra level of determination.
Most people probably know me as the jovial, Godfearing, career driven person, but my goal is to fully transition from being a fulltime employee to a fulltime entrepreneur. I want my business to grow so that I can leave a legacy for my families. Eventually, I want to be able to have the time freedom to take vacations whenever I want while my business is still earning.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Living in Florida gives us so many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and live as if we are vacationing. Some of my favorite things to do is to visit the West Coast. I love the Naples, Captiva and Sanibel Islands areas. It’s relaxing and is less than 2 hours’ drive from most parts of South Florida. For a brunch when my friends are in town, I love to visit the Deerfield Beach Area on A1A, there are so many great restaurant options and the scenic drive down the intercoastal is amazing. South Beach is where I like to take my more youthful friends or families, as everyone wants to see what the “hype” is about South Beach. LOL.
If I want to get away from the area but not do such a long drive, I usually head north to West Palm beach, where after a short drive I catch the ferry and go across to Peanut Island, where we swim, lay on the beach or in rare occasions pitch a tent and sleep overnight under the stars.
For the ones who like to party, the recommendation is Winwood. The artsy and vibrant environment has a diverse array of things to do. When time is not a factor, taking the double decker tour bus from Bayside down to the Keys is an all-time favorite for me and my friends. We do not have to drive, and we get to enjoy the comfort of sightseeing along the way down to the Florida Keys. There the activities are limitless, from water (snorkeling or jet skiing) to land, just browsing the streets and eating at the different restaurants. And for my people who are wine lovers, driving to Homestead for a visit to Schnebly Redland Winery is a must! Oh, my tastebud, the multiple and unique flavors of wines are amazing. My favorite is lychee., there you can do beer tasting as well.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a huge shoutout to my grandma Mrs. Mary Jane Williams, who raised me since I was 3 months old. Her earthly presence is missed daily, and I think of her every time I have to make an important decision as well as often wonders “what would she think or how would she feel” seeing me succeed. I have so many families and friends who have supported me, whether they are my voice of reason or simply clients who allows me to plan their vacations, their love and efforts are not unnoticed. However, I would like to highlight one of those people, Ms. Claudine Gentles, Claudine was the person who introduce me to this side of the travel business, where she showed me how I can not only be a customer, but also a merchant of the travel product. Since I started this business, her words of encouragement always reminding me of “how good I am at this or even how much better I can become, is greatly appreciated.
