We had the good fortune of connecting with Tanuj Surve and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tanuj, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
Born and raised in Mumbai, the financial nerve center of India, I was immersed in a world bustling with opportunities and challenges from a young age. The city’s vibrant economic activities sparked my curiosity about finance and technology, guiding my academic and career choices early on. I pursued a degree in Finance, Compliance, and Regulations, setting the stage for my initial role as a project manager where I led financial products and services.

My journey took a significant turn when I stumbled upon the world of cryptocurrencies. Intrigued by the promise of a technology that offered more accessible and owner-controlled currency systems, I delved deeper into blockchain technology. This newfound passion led me to the University of California, Berkeley, for further education, where I didn’t just attend classes; I became an active member of the Blockchain at Berkeley association.

At Berkeley, I was no longer just a student, but a part of a thriving community of innovators. I engaged with fellow students, industry partners, and startups, absorbing every lesson and sharing my insights, which were rooted deeply in my Mumbai upbringing. Each interaction, each project at Berkeley, wasn’t just a learning experience but a step towards shaping a future where finance is more inclusive and empowering.

Reflecting on my journey from the bustling streets of Mumbai to the innovative corridors of Berkeley, it’s clear that my background didn’t just shape who I am today—it propelled me into realms I had once only imagined, turning dreams into tangible realities through the lens of finance and blockchain technology.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

My journey through the realms of finance and blockchain technology has been anything but ordinary. From the bustling financial district of Mumbai to the innovative halls of UC Berkeley, my career path has been shaped by a relentless pursuit of knowledge and a desire to make a significant impact.

What sets me apart is my ability to bridge diverse worlds—combining the rigorous discipline of finance with the dynamic innovation of blockchain technology. This unique blend has enabled me to lead projects that are not only technologically advanced but also economically impactful. I am most proud of my role in developing blockchain applications that enhance transaction security and user experience, leading to a substantial increase in customer transactions and trust.
Reaching this point was far from easy. The transition from traditional finance to the avant-garde field of blockchain presented numerous challenges. The rapid pace of technological change meant that I had to be continually learning and adapting. My time at Blockchain at Berkeley was crucial; it was there that I honed my skills in real-world applications of blockchain and cultivated a network of peers and mentors who were equally passionate about this revolutionary technology.

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the importance of resilience. In the tech-driven world where failure is often stigmatized, I’ve found that each setback has been a stepping stone to greater success. Embracing failure as an integral part of learning has allowed me to innovate without fear, pushing boundaries and pioneering new solutions.
I want the world to know that my brand and story are about transformation—transforming industries through technology and transforming personal challenges into opportunities for growth and impact. My journey underscores the power of adaptability and the importance of continuous learning and improvement. Whether leading teams or developing new technologies, my goal remains the same: to drive progress and inspire change.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If a best friend were visiting Berkeley for a week, I’d craft an unforgettable itinerary mixing culture, nature, and innovation. We’d start with breakfast at La Note and explore the UC Berkeley campus, followed by a scenic hike in Tilden Park. A day in San Francisco would include Alcatraz and dining in the Mission District. We’d enjoy local eats and brews at Fieldwork Brewing Company, dive into the arts at the Berkeley Art Museum, and unwind at the Berkeley Marina. Evenings would be spent tasting the pioneering cuisine at Chez Panisse and experiencing live music at The UC Theatre.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
In reflecting on my journey and the successes I’ve achieved, the unwavering support and encouragement from my family cannot be overstated. They have been my cornerstone—providing me with strength during challenging times and celebrating my achievements, no matter how big or small. Their belief in my potential and their sacrifices have been instrumental in shaping not only my career but also my character. It’s their guidance and love that have instilled in me the values of resilience, hard work, and integrity. I owe a tremendous amount of my success to my family, and I dedicate every milestone to them as a token of my gratitude and love. Their role in my story deserves immense recognition.
