We had the good fortune of connecting with Tawana Randall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tawana, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I feel like you. have to take risk in business and in your personal life. I took a risk and stepped out on faith when I quit my full time corporate America job to focus full time on my business. I knew it was something i wanted to do and needed to do for my family. No benefits coming in, a few bucks in saving and my plan is all I had. We also take risk to grow in business by hiring employees, scaling, purchasing equipment and education. Successful entrepreneurship involves taking risks but it requires planning and hard work.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I put Gold Star Logistics Group together brick by brick. It was not easy and everyday is rewarding yet challenging. I have an amazing team that works daily to make us look good. As entrepreneurs we always have to look for ways to grow and scale and take care of the team we have. I believe without a good team, you cant be successful in business. I have learned in business to separate friends from business, not to jump in partnerships without research and agreements and not to leap with my heart. I have learned it takes time to grow and not to judge my progress by where someone else is in business. Most importantly I have learned that I am capable of anything I put my mind to if I stick with it and put God first. I would want people to know I work very hard for what I have. I am a black woman in the logistics and transportation industry, which is not easy. But the time I put in to make this business work is for my children and for other little girls who want to to something different even if it’s in a male dominated industry.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Lord know i miss the city of Miami where I grew up, but Atlanta is where the money resides and where I call home. You coming in town to visit we are gonna be foodies for the entire week. I love to eat and try new things and Atlanta has some amazing restaurants and spots to visit. So we have to start with Milk and Honey Restaurant at Cascade or Breakfast At Barney’s fo breakfast. Its also a must we visit Atlanta Fish Market, Papi’s Cuban & Caribbean Grill (for the Miami Culture) and Breakers Korean BBQ. Of course we cant eat the whole time so we can check out Trap Music Museum,Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park and then a good drink at Suite Food Lounge or Blue Martinis. One thing I have learned about Atlanta is there is always something going on and something to do… we wont be bored.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My hard work and success are dedicated to my mom, my children & my partner Terry. My mother has supported me in business since day 1. Of course, as parents they want you to be stable and have employment and she didn’t like the idea of me leaving my corporate job but stood by me through the good and bad. She is always at my events, mostly working a booth or my registration table and she is my partner in my new venture, Dependable Screening Solutions. She is everything to me and my kids and I do this to make her proud. My honey Terry Bonner has been there to hold me down, left me up and make me smile which keeps me going. He won’t let me give up and there have been times when its gets hard. I appreciate them all for having my back.
