We had the good fortune of connecting with Torenzo Gann and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Torenzo, how do you think about risk?
Life is full of risks. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Be bold. But be wise. Gather information, seek wise counsel. Learn from your failures. Success in my case is an accumulation of failures.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I began drawing at age seven or eight. With the encouragement of my high school art teacher I became a professional artist. Like most artists I’ve had many challenges, successes, disappointments, and failures. I call problems and challenges opportunities. My addiction to alcohol and other drugs caused a serious setback in my career. I permanently overcame my addiction with the help of AA and God, and got back on track. I’ve learned that nothing of real value and satisfaction comes easily; that what I think about things may not be correct. So I ask for input from others whom I respect and I avoid negative thinking people. I am where I am today by persevering through it all and not giving up. It is my hope that my story and artwork inspires other artists.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Stuart is a fantastic destination city full of exciting cultural and gastronomical delights. For example, for breakfast, lunch or dinner we’d dine at the charming Osceola Cafe in the historic downtown section of the city. For dessert we’d motor over to the amazing French bakery, Sucre. Then we’d walk up one short block to the Martin Arts Cultural Court House Gallery to feast our eyes on one of their exciting monthly exhibits. Following that we’d head over to a nearby marina and have a latte at Gilbert’s Coffee bar. Throughout the balance of the week, we’d tour the Elliott Museum to see their extensive classic car, truck, and motorcycle collection and on Thursday night return for one their music concerts and dance parties.
While visiting the Elliott Museum now through the end of June, 2023 you’ll have the opportunity to see the Free Electrons Exhibit featuring my recent work and paintings by Danuta Rothschild.
Another wonderful venue for art close to Stuart is the Palm Room Gallery on Sewell’s Point. This extraordinary gallery features original work by professional local, national, and international artists of the Martin Artisans Guild.
Loving the Florida weather and lifestyle as I do I’d most certainly schedule a few days at the Stuart beach between our cultural and epicurean adventures.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The dedication of my shoutout include my spectacular wife, Lyn. My late friend and mentor, Thomas Edward Spencer. My high school art teacher, Ms. Richards, and the book, Art Spirit by Robert Henri.
