We had the good fortune of connecting with Valentina Delfino and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Valentina, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
What inspired me to start my own business was a culmination of my work experiences and successes. One pivotal moment was in 2012 when I participated in a sustainable competition and had the honor of having my eco-friendly gown worn by Missy Pyle at The Academy Awards. Winning Suzy Amis Cameron’s competition, Red Carpet Green Dress, not only changed my perspective but also made me realize that my path should align with sustainability. Recognizing the impact of the fashion industry and its supply chain on the environment, I was determined to make a difference. Following this realization, I pursued opportunities to expand my knowledge and expertise. I immersed myself in various fashion houses and explored different facets of the industry during my time in New York. I had the privilege of learning about design and production from fashion houses such as Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Stella McCartney, among others. Furthermore, I had the honor to work with Mr. John Martinez, where I gained valuable insights into runway productions, casting, styling, and more. I was fortunate to contribute to projects like Miami Swim Week, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Miami, New York Fashion Week, and numerous photo shoots that enriched my understanding of the industry.
Having accumulated these invaluable experiences, I made the decision to return to Miami and establish my own brand, Valentina Delfino. This step allowed me to fully embody my passion for sustainable fashion and contribute to reshaping the industry with environmentally conscious practices.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Over the years, my clients have reached out to me seeking bespoke pieces, particularly for important events such as weddings, where they desired something unique, tailored to their body, and exclusively theirs. Recognizing a gap in the market, I established a business approach that combines elements of an image consultant and stylist. I begin by visiting my clients’ closets, where we explore their favorite garments that make them feel comfortable and beautiful. We discuss their special event, their preferences in terms of colors, prints, fabrics, as well as the aspects of their bodies they would like to accentuate or downplay. Taking their measurements, I then proceed to work on designing their desired look. This involves searching for the perfect fabrics and presenting them with a proposed ensemble. Once they approve, the magic begins with private fittings conducted in the comfort of their own homes.
The most fulfilling part of my work is witnessing the transformation in my clients’ faces – their joy, confidence, and gratitude. It is truly incredible to observe how a single piece of clothing can completely change a woman’s perception of herself. My dresses inspire women to embrace their best selves by providing a perfect fit, while also minimizing harm to the environment through responsible production practices that avoid excessive waste.
Our business philosophy has expanded to include not only creating special pieces for our clients but also assisting them with styling existing items in their wardrobe. We may design a matching blouse for a cherished skirt or breathe new life into a garment that has long been neglected in their closet.
Furthermore, we are now venturing into the realm of ready-to-wear fashion, aiming to curate special capsule collections featuring environmentally-friendly fabrics. We are actively exploring ways to recycle our fabric waste and minimize our overall impact on the planet.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were to visit, I would love to take her to some of my favorite activities and places. We could start our mornings by joining my favorite Pilates session at Tremble with Nicole or an infrared heated yoga class at Break Free Movement. After our workout, we could treat ourselves to coffee and ham & cheese croissants at Madruga Bakery or opt for a healthier alternative at Pura Vida.
During the day, we could enjoy some time at the beach or explore the local mini markets on the weekend. In the evening, I would love to take her out for dinner at either Mandolin or Amal, as both are delicious and among my favorite options. For sushi options my all time favorite would be Matsuri,
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are numerous individuals whom I would like to acknowledge and express gratitude towards, as they have believed in me since the very beginning and provided unwavering support to keep me going. First and foremost, I am grateful for my husband, His constant encouragement and invaluable wisdom have been the foundation of my journey. During the most challenging moments, he has stood by my side, reminding me that tough times eventually pass and that we must persevere. He has taught me the balance between nurturing a family, raising children, and pursuing a successful career.
A special place of gratitude is reserved for Mr. John Martinez, who initially served as my boss and has since become an invaluable mentor and dear friend. His inspiration and guidance have exposed me to diverse facets of the fashion industry, shaping my growth and propelling me forward. He represents the ideals of pursuing one’s passion, working diligently, and valuing family above all else.
My long-time friend, constant guidance and support Theresa Balderas. Her discerning eye, as captured through her camera lenses, has consistently guided my creative journey. Presently, Theresa holds the role of my Art Director.
Suzy Amis Cameron, through her remarkable initiative Red Carpet Green Dress, instilled in me the confidence and inspiration to embark on my fashion journey with a meaningful commitment to both the community and the environment. After all, what significance does a business hold if it lacks purpose or social consciousness?
Finally, I am profoundly grateful to the friends who have become family. Embracing my creations and offering invaluable support, you know who you are, thank you.
