We had the good fortune of connecting with Valeria Avirett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Valeria, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Miami School Advisors was born out of the need to support smart parents who want the best education for their children.
Finding the right schools for my children had proven to be challenging. Many of us did not grow up in Miami and we are not familiar with schools and the system. I was working in real estate assisting corporate relocations, and my clients often needed school insight to make decisions. I knew there was an opportunity to start a school consultancy business to help parents navigate school choices.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am the Founder of Miami School Advisors. I am a School Consultant who helps parents find the right schools for their children.
Our goal is to educate parents on the Miami School District and provide objective advice on private and public schools, so that parents can maximize opportunities and make the right decision.
I founded Miami School Advisors to help parents avoid making mistakes when it comes to education. I have a strong business background – with over 15 years of marketing and sales experience and an MBA. I have lived in New York, Miami and most recently Colorado. Our family had an opportunity to be expats in Hong Kong, so I am very familiar with moving domestically and abroad. I understand the importance of building a community and how schools lay a foundation for friendships, academic opportunities and happiness.
These are exciting times for Miami. The pandemic accelerated the growth and development of the city. A large part of my business is helping Northeast families moving to Miami. I also work with young local families who are looking for Elementary school and want to better understand public schools and magnet programs. The young generation of parents is smart and really busy, they hire us to cut to the chase and learn about choices and opportunities in Miami schools.
What sets us apart is that we do not operate under an advertising model. The schools do not provide us with incentives to include them in our lists, presentations or school guides. We provide objective advice that is based on our own research, experience and interaction with schools, administrators, teachers and students. We focus on Preschool through High School while other Educational Consultants focus on College selection and preparation.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Miami has become a truly sophisticated city when it comes to things to do, dining and entertainment. However, I still love the classics – South Pointe Park on an early morning Saturday morning, the Coconut Grove Sailing Club and Kennedy Park, where on a hot afternoon the biggest treat is grabbing a frozen lemonade from A.C. Icees. When the weather is nice, Fairchild Gardens, Deering Bay Estate and The Kampong in the Grove are beautiful tropical jewels and must visit destinations.
When it comes to dining, the best places showcase the local community and highlight the city’s diversity. I am Nicaraguan, so I love a good steak and the home flavors featured at the Spotted Gallo. For a nice dinner out, Amara at Paraiso, Mandolin Bistro, Tigre and post drinks at Faena are always memorable. Love the concept behind Upper Buena Vista and the sophistication of the Design District. Whether sailing or boating, there is nothing like cruising on Biscayne Bay and anchoring for a swim while embracing the ever-expanding Miami skyline. With a few days to spare, a trip to the Keys is mandatory, where the Atlantic hues take your breath away and the distinct Keys culture and cuisine is not to be missed.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, Scott Avirett, has always been my biggest supporter, a strategist who is constantly pushing me to see the big picture. Kat Longmire with Miami Global Relocations has been a great partner through the years.
