We had the good fortune of connecting with Vencent Dorcilien and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vencent, why did you pursue a creative career?
Whenever I get a chance to post on social media or to my Instagram story, I write hashtags that represent me as a photographer but also as a #creativewhocreates. As a photographer, my mind is constantly thinking of ideas of how to be creative with a small camera. This creative career of being a photographer takes you into a creative space where you get to be yourself. It’s like being an artist, your mind is the paintbrush on a blank canvas and we capture what we see, what compels us, what we feel in the moment. It’s all about staying present.

One of my favorite things about photography is, it’s an art form of self-expression. Now, I’m a free-spirited person. I’m also into fashion, footwear, art, nature, designs, etc. It’s not like I always wanted to be a photographer. I remember years ago that I swore to myself that I’ll never be a photographer, I would rather be in front of the lens. Fast forward, I didn’t force my unknown gift, it came naturally to me.

I’ve made it to this point of my career with a camera and a vision. I’m glad I took the risk on September 25, 2019, on pursuing photography. That was the day that I took a photo for the first time off a camera. It all started on Collins Ave, 82nd St in Miami, Florida with my friend, Maria. The day I picked up my camera was the day I signed my life over with everything that comes along with this journey: editing, marketing, networking, business, sacrifices, expenses, investing, curiosity, researching, revamping, doubt, risk, and self-motivation.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m proud of the process from when I first started photography to where I am today. You’re often to have more failure than victory but if you continue pushing forward and keep going, the results are rewarding. Success doesn’t rush, the greatest reward is the journey, this is what excites me. Life is like a puzzle. you have to reflect on the things you have been through and connect them to understand your purpose of where you want to be in life. I know I’m headed in the right direction. I’m honestly excited about what the unknown is, I can feel it. When everything falls aligned to what you heart into, there’s no looking back. Just trust the process.

Consistency is the key to what got me here professionally. My journey started as a hobby but because many people liked my style and my photography work, I took a risk to turn this passion into a business. Also, Photography is like creating art from a blank canvas. We are an artist that creates art. As a photographer, you observe things differently from others, so I must capture a story from my vision.

It’s never easy for any journey that one takes. It’s expected to have high moments and low moments in a journey. The main question one should ask is, what do you do when things are not working well especially if that’s your dream of becoming successful or running a successful business? Do you give up and quit or do you keep going, keep pushing no matter what? There’s not one successful person or business that wouldn’t admit that their business didn’t fail. The most important thing is to stay focused, stay consistent, and remember your why. Mistakes are normal but you want to make sure you learn from your mistakes and go back to the drawing board to make adjustments and improve.

My ultimate goal is to inspire people to never give up on their journey. I didn’t get to where I am today just by an accident. It takes hard work, sacrifices, patience, self-motivation, and faith to get the results you’re aiming for. Success is not built overnight. I didn’t have notoriety overnight. It’s the small step we should embrace that makes the ultimate impact. When I started this journey, all I had was a vision and a camera. I dedicate myself to my craft, I’m constantly curious about things, I’m devoting myself to learn new things. The moment you stop is the moment you allow yourself to procrastinate. Time is precious, use it wisely. Every day is an opportunity to get better.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being a Miami native for 31 years, Miami is one of South Florida’s premier vacation destinations for tourists to visit. Rich in history, diverse culture, sports, world-class nightlife, soft-sand beaches, and great weather, there are many attractions to see and do here such as visiting Wynwood Walls, Miami Art Design District, Miami Beach, Lincoln Road Mall Strip, Bayside Marketplace, South Pointe Park, Vizcaya Museum & Garden.

Some of the most essential Miami food experiences would include visiting prime 112, finding the best Cuban coffee and sandwiches in Little Havana, or eating fine cuisine in Au Bon Gout restaurants in North Miami, or Joe’s Stone Crab in Miami Beach.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I want to give a shoutout to my beautiful wife, Arlene. Thank you for supporting me in everything that I do. You always comforted me when times were tough on this journey. Thank you for rooting for me every step of the way.

Secondly, I want to give a shoutout to my daughter, Aaliyah. Daddy wants to make sure you live a comfortable life. You are my biggest motivation to keep going, keep striving, and never stopping. Daddy loves you! Even though you’re 5 months I hope I make you proud! I also want to shout out to my siblings, Junior, Vinskee, and Victoria for supporting me since day one.

Last but not least, My biggest shoutout goes to Bobby Metelus. Thank you for inspiring me with your work over the years as a filmmaker, storyteller, director, and lifestyle photographer. Meeting you in August 2020 was the best thing to happen to me and for my career. Your advice of sharing your experience and your knowledge of photography has resonated with me in my photography journey.
