We had the good fortune of connecting with Victor Luiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Victor, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’m a naturally risk-averse person so I avoid it where possible but running my own business has forced me to take on a certain amount of risk. I’ve tried to mitigate it as and where possible by trying to be prepared for the typical issues and problems that others in my line of work face and often complain about, but there is only so much you can do. Sometimes unexpected problems arise and you have to deal with them on the fly. It’s cliché to say, but I use them as learning experiences, whether the result was what I was hoping for or not.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a marine surveyor, which is basically like a home inspector for boats. I assess the condition and value of a boat before it is purchased so that the buyer is properly informed about what he’s about to spend his money on. It’s a one man operation so I alone see the fruits or failures of my work but it also means I have nobody to answer to, except the client, of course.
I’d like more people to know that marine surveyors are a service they should use when buying their first boat. Many people end up with a lemon because they buy a pre-owned boat without having it surveyed (because they never knew that there was such an option)
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I prefer the lesser known attractions to the ones “everyone has to see” so I’d take them to the little hole-in-the-wall restaurants, the quieter dive bars and the more secluded beaches. My wife and I moved to Lake Worth Beach about five years ago for those exact reasons. It’s mostly off the radar and even people who are from South Florida don’t know much about it.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I was lucky enough to have a very generous mentor when I first got into the marine industry. Her name was Meme, she insisted I start from the bottom and took no short-cuts in my career. I’m a huge advocate of that line of thinking since you can’t be an effective leader if you’ve never been led before. She also challenged me beyond what I thought I was capable of, but, I guess, not beyond what she thought I was capable of and that built confidence, knowledge and character.
