We had the good fortune of connecting with Wendi Lewis-Knight and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Wendi, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
My name is Wendi, and I am an Entertainer, Recording Artist & Songwriter from The Bahamas. From a very young age (4 years old) I performed and sang for audiences and was always known as Little Sister Wendy Lewis. Singing is apart of me… it is not something that I chose, it chose me. This means that all through my childhood, me life included being a rambunctious little island girl AND performing at public events. Those events included church services, government events, school concerts etc. That early routine shaped my discipline and caused me to be prepared for a life as a professional artist now who has to juggle entrepreneurship, motherhood, family life, and my music career.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a Caribbean Pop Artist who sings and writes songs that are in the genres of Junkanoo, Goombay, Soca and Rake & Scrape. My degree is from Berklee College of Music where I studied Music Business and Voice so I have a wide array of genres that I am fluent in like jazz, pop, & classical music. What makes me different from many other Caribbean artists in the region is my being Bahamian and my ultimate dedication to being a musician, not just a pop artist.

I am most proud of my newest single ‘Tell Her Come’ which will be followed by my 1st full length album titled ‘Unboxed’. ‘Tell Her Come’ is edgier than what Wendi’s current listenership is used to from her. We anticipate this will resonate with her current fans as well as cause her to gain new listeners. The song is about a toxic man who’s cheating partner approaches Wendi ‘as a woman’. This content is very relatable and will appeal to a broad female demographic, not just women in the Caribbean diaspora, but also R&B, Pop & Soul audiences because the content is that of a jilted woman. It is written and produced by a dynamically talented team from The Bahamas who have won multiple awards, have numerous Grammy nominated and Billboard charting songs as well as international placements and placements in major Motion Pictures.

Wendi is the Bahamas’ top female recording artist. Her entrance onto the Bahamas’ music scene began at the tender age of 4 years old and her re-introduction was birthed out of a need for fresh new artistry and innovation.
Wendi represents female empowerment, sex appeal, powerhouse vocals, strength, and has been trailblazing for female artists in the Bahamas putting on dynamic live performances throughout the Bahamas and the Region.
With songs like One Song, Attitude, Een Missin’ It, In Front Of You, Walk Out, Conch Gone, and Save The World (used by Susan G Komen Intl) Wendi’s musical contributions are extensive and iconic.
Wendi is the currently the most awarded female recording artist and entertainer in The Bahamas. She is a 4-time Bahamian Icon Award Nominee, Bahamian Icon Award Winner for outstanding achievement in music, and a 2-time Elevation Award Winner with multiple nominations. Wendi is also making waves on the international scene as the 2018 and 2019 winner of the SAO International Soca Award for Best Music Video and the 2019 winner for Female Soca Performer of the Year. In 2018, she won the Hollywood Music in Media Award for Best Dance Song.
‘Unboxed’ will be Wendi’s first full length album. The album can be described as Caribbean Pop which features genres like Soca, Junkanoo, Rake & Scrape, and Dancehall. It is a much edgier album that explores more adult themes than what Wendi fans are used to hearing from her. The album is slated to have 9 tracks, 4 of which are pegged to be featured singles.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Nassau, Bahamas but if i have a friend visiting, we would go island hopping! The Bahamas is an archipelago of islands and cays and the 1st place we’d visit is the island of Exuma, which has the most beautiful beaches in the world. We would spend about 2-3 days there then we would come back to Nassau to hang out at Arawak Cay in Nassau to enjoy the amazing Bahamian cuisine. Another thing that I love to do is fish! So we’d hop on over to The Berry Islands which is short 15 minute flight from Nassau where we could enjoy some amazing sport fishing. Back in Nassau we would enjoy the buzzing nightlife and catch one of the local live bands perform.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my Father & Mother, Wendell & Naomi Lewis as well as my husband and daughter, Dyson Knight & Zenndarah
