We had the good fortune of connecting with Yuan-Wen WANG and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yuan-Wen, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
This is the question that I’ve been asking to myself all the time.
I used to be really convinced that I want to be an artist, any kind of artist with no reasons.
It’s just like a magic, creating from nothing to something. I enjoy the process, and I feel connected to innerself. My mother told me that she often found me extremely concentrating on drawing or creating since I was three.
It might be something that I was born with, that I can never stop creating. There was some time I tried a full-time and not art related job. I tried to ignore my instincts and desires for creation. It eventually turned out stocked. My soul finally shouted out to me. One night, I had a dream and woke up with tears all over my face and the pillow. I understand deeply it’s because I wasn’t doing art for a long time and my soul was so dry and withered.
I was on mute.
It’s the moment that I made up my mind. No matter what happened in life, I will continue to pursue my art career.
I might be slow, but I will keep going.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It was not easy to keep going along the way of this art career. Sometimes it’s like swimming against waves. I was in an art class when I was 8, spending 9 hours a week on different kinds of art for 4 years. I learned a lot of technical skills from then. But also ending up with limited art vision. Only until I started my career in the University of arts, then I began to open my mind surrounded by many talented people from all types of creative fields. My passion towards art was again recovered. In 2008 I moved from Taiwan to Spain, the experiences of living abroad brought me new inspirations and thoughts on my art. In the past I have explored art using different media such as illustration, installation and performance art.
In the past 10 years I’ve been working on Abstract paintings, from them you can find the patterns of my roots, patterns of my life from trying to fit one box to the other.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I LOVE to enjoy good food. I’m obsessed with food as many Taiwaneses do. 🙂 My friends ask me every time for restaurant recommendations, and the map on my phone has many saved places. But the difficult part is there are too many good places to choose from.
For drinks, I would recommend tasting some delicious natural wine with a good vibe in Garage Bar.
Barcelona has plenty of places to offer visitors, I normally enjoy wandering in the narrow streets of the old town and getting lost in time. (better to do it during the daytime though)
If you are looking for some art exhibitions, then I’d recommend the following places :Caixa Forum, MACBA(you can see many skaters in front of it always), MNAC, MOKO, Alzueta Gallery.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
