There are so many factors that affect how our lives turn out, but one of the most interesting is how our backgrounds give us unique strengths and perspectives that affect who we are as adults. We asked rising stars from the community to tell us about their background and upbringing and how they feel it’s impacted who they are today.

I am from Portmore, Saint Catherine, Jamaica. I traveled to the states when I was about 14 years old. I was raised by my very stern but loving grandmother for most of upbringing in Jamaica. I hold my childhood memories close because it has definitely shaped me to be the man I am today. My grandmother taught me ” that there are always many sides to a problem, but only one solution.” As a child, it barely made any sense, until I became older. My grandmother’s way of raising me, was probably extremely strict as a child, but as man I cannot thank her enough. I was taught, manners, respect, discipline and to always have a peace of mind to stand for yourself no matter what. The only failure that truly exist is failure of self. Read more>>

I am from Miami FL . Born and Raised. I was raised by my mother who was a musician , who was always interested in art and culture . She was always documenting anything and everything we did . My grandfather owned his own Portrait studio in little Havana which is were I first developed film and printed my first photograph. at a very young age . I remember always being surround by art and culture . My aunt was into theater and singing . I was always surround by family members who expressed themselves creatively. I believe that my upbringing and background gave me the tools and experiences to allow myself to be creative and explore all creative outlets. I am from New York City and I have lived in 4 of the 5 boroughs. Growing up in New York City and being raised by a single Mom with no brothers or sisters helped me to understand the work ethic that is needed to survive. As a degreed Electrical Engineer, I was empowered to set examples to encourage others to make a difference. I worked at a major telecom company and received a US Patent for the development of a LASER Focus Tracking System. Because of my willingness to give back, I became a college Radio station Disc Jockey and encouraged are youth to be better. I have been in several technology programs, From Cyber Security to Community Relations.
