There is a wealth of academic research that suggests that differences in risk appetite are at the heart of differences in career and business trajectories. We wanted to go beyond the theory and ask real people from the community about their perspectives and experiences with risk and risk taking.
I believe risk is an essential part of growth—both personally and professionally. To me risk is oportunity. The more risk we take, the more paths we open, looking at it from a learning and experience perspective. I think when we think about risks, we think about the possibility of both gaining and losing something, although if we think about it as a form of exchange for learning or experience (although they could be the same thing), we are different, we work differently, we move forward differently. I view taking risks as an essential part of both business and life. Throughout my journey, I’ve embraced numerous risks, one of the first was leaving my familiar surroundings—specifically, my home state. I recall mentioning the word “fashion” and instantly sensing the disbelief and eye rolls, haha! People often fear what they do not understand.
