We asked some of the city’s rising stars to reflect on what made a difference in their journey. We asked them to tell us about what they think the most important factor has been behind their success.

Alysha Roper | Real Estate Broker & Trucking Company Owner

I believe the most important factor behind the success of my brand is the impact it makes on the community and especially for the 9-5 working class of people who are trying to transition into Entrepreneurs. Road Runnerz has been essential to so many individuals who needed that necessary push into becoming business owners in the trucking industry. Our course Freightology has helped many people understand the logistics behind the business and has offered them an opportunity to take control over their own income and become financially free. My late business partner, Errol and I worked relentlessly to share all of the knowledge we knew to make sure that our students were successful. It feels great to see many people walk away from the jobs and grow their businesses. We are thankful that God has allowed us to be a vessel in changing so many lives. Read more>>

Leo Photographer | Professional Wedding Photographer

I believe there are 3 key factors behind my success. The first is Passion! Passion for what you do is super important. More than 20 years ago, I decided to become a photographer. When I decided this, my parents were very concerned and thought I would end up being unsuccessful. They suggested something with more security like an accountant, doctor, or lawyer, and because of this, I tried every job under the sun. I never could quite quit photography though and would do it wherever I could fit it. This included 2A.M. Edits and shoots before class on a regular basis. One day I realized while taking an exam for what my parents deemed as my steady career, that there’s no way I wanted to be in this profession any longer. I stood up and walked over to the professor with my exam in hand, and screamed I QUIT. Then walked out and never returned. It was one of the happiest moments of my life. I realized what I wanted to do as my career was something I was truly passionate about. Read more>>

TUNDRA KING | Co Owner of an Academy serving students Kindergarten through 12th Grade

My parents are the most important factor behind our sucess. My dad was unable to receive the education he always desired because he had to work at the farm to help his Parents, My Mom had to assist her siblings as well since she was the eldest. They both knew the importance of education ahd that it was the key to success. In 1964, with only a 3rd grade education, my Dad opened his own Construction Company. With my mom by his side, they were able to maintain a lucrative business for over 55 years. My Parents modeled what entreprenurialship looked like. It would be an extension of their dreams for us to open our own business. Driven by seeing black children disportionately suspended and arrested, my sister wanted to step in and make a difference. She shared with us how she wanted to open a school for those students whom traditional school setting was not suitable to help them navigate through school. After many family meetings with our parents, siblings and potential donors-Moreland’s Educational Alternative Academy was birthed. Read more>>

The most important factor behind our business is that we are a direct representation of our brand. This has allowed our customers to trust that we will provide them with the proper education and quality products to start a healthier lifestyle. Before starting our business, we managed to capture a specific audience by showing what we cooked, how we ate, and the products that we used on a regular basis. We were able to convert those followers into our customers, which was the starting point of the success of our business. Read more>>

Gonzalo Fuenmayor | Artist

Success is an elusive and slippery concept. It is hard to define, determine and grasp, since it is always changing. I always have in mind what my dad used to tell me whenever things were not going the way I wanted to… He would say something like “victory and failure only last a week; after this, no one will remember or care.” With these words as a soundtrack, the only thing left is to work hard every single day. For me, discipline and perseverance have been decisive in plowing through challenges and difficulties. Read more>>

Spinelli | DJ + Community Activist

The most important factor behind my success as a whole, is intention. I honestly believe that is the root of what makes or breaks a lot of success stories. Now, I don’t measure success solely on merit even though it does play a part but something about having pure intentions when it comes to what you do or who you are, allows you to shine differently than all the rest. The most important factor behind the success of my brand is having a consistent relationship with my “tribe,” and keeping them in mind when creating my content. What most call their target audience I call my “tribe” because although I’m educating and sharing my experience with beauty, elevating my image and womanhood, it’s something we all have in common! I make sure to respond to my comments and messages, answer questions and even do “Subscriber Request” videos so they feel heard and apart of my journey.
