We had the good fortune of connecting with Skai Kyler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Skai, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Since childhood, the performing arts or creative artistic pursuits have always been a heavy influence in my life.  I was raised in a family community, where my uncles and aunts had traveling bands that always inspired me.  I use to draw and write poetry in my younger years.  And I’ve always just been inspired to help people where I could.  So my small business really just turned out to be a collective of certain aspects of those things over time.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Sure thing, our artistic illustrations are meant to inspire our customers.  Every image, quote, word phrase and color pattern that is selected is very intentional.  We really want our customers to feel connected to the products.  We’re most excited about our 2023 Melanin Savings Calendar.  It’s a calendar with beautiful illustrations, inspirational monthly quotes and a savings guide that assists women on a journey towards saving $1k at the end of the year.

Drive and dedication has definitely helped us remain present from a professional standpoint. Easy is relative, so, we’d probably use the words exciting, interesting, and always learning to describe our journey.

Some of the biggest lessons we’ve learned along the way are: Don’t quit, or get to discouraged if you really believe in what you’re doing. Also, that all good things, take time, to grow and flourish. And lastly, that the right opportunities will always present themselves in due time, if you’re consistent and passionate about what you’re doing.

We want people to know that 1608 Kollections is a brand that truly cares about our customers.  Enthusiasm and thoughtfulness goes into every product we create, with the sole purpose of bringing joy and enlightenment to others.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We love friends trips!  Yayyee! In the DMV area, we’d definitely suggest they take them to see all the monuments and museums.  Have them grab brunch/dinner at places like: Urban Roast, Kitchen Cray, Mayflower Club, Shoto, or The Pembroke.  We’d also suggest they visit Old Town Alexandria, Adams Morgan and also catch some live bands in the area.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The small business success of 1608 Kollections would be nothing without God.  The creative ideas and consistent resources that he’s provided along the way keeps us inspired to want more, and do more.  My friends and family as well. I’m truly convinced that I’m surrounded by some of the best people a girl could ask.  And of course, anyone that has ever supported our products in any way.  We are beyond grateful for everything that has been accomplished thus far.  And we can’t wait to see what the future holds.
