We had the good fortune of connecting with Sophia and Alexa Quirch and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sophia, what role has risk played in your life or career?
We have seen through our experience that risk is crucial in order to take your business to the next level or to even start it at all. Krewe du Q’s conception began with Alexa and I taking a big risk. We both had comfortable full-time jobs and left to try and start our own business in the fashion world, which is extremely competitive. It was taking that risk that brought us to where we are today – and we could not be happier! We feel that sometimes the biggest risk someone can take is not taking any risk at all.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In creating Krewe du Q’s collections we have always strived to have pieces that are high quality and fashionable, yet reasonably priced. We want all girls to feel powerful and beautiful when they wear our pieces, without having to break the bank; and it was not easy making this happen. We had to research a plethora of manufacturers from all over the world to find ones who share that same level of care and love for quality when creating our pieces. Making sure that our manufacturer only used the best fabrics and practiced safe environments was extremely important to us. Also, being that two blondie girls run the company entirely, we have unfortunately had to deal with issues of not being taken seriously and with people who have tried to take advantage of us in the business world. This has taught us to be stronger and more business savvy. We’ve had to fight for what we want and it has made us more motivated to get there. Krewe du Q proves that women can be young, carefree, and adventurous while also being savvy, strong, and fearless.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In all honesty, we would take them straight to the Bahamas! Days filled with spearfishing, diving, and tanning are how we feel most at home. It instantly makes everyone feel happier and more alive being in the salty crystal blue water and sandy beaches. We’d start off the morning roaming the island to get a little sweat in, then have some conch salad and Tropical Drinks on a sandbar nearby. We’d go diving for lobsters and tan (in Krewe du Q of course) to fill the afternoon. This would all be followed by a night of dancing on the sand under the moonlight, while of course playing some classic oldies jams.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Biggest shoutout to our crazy, amazing, loving family! We wouldn’t be where we are today without them. They have encouraged us from day one and made us believe in ourselves even when we didn’t. They are our biggest cheerleaders and our loudest critics; brutally honest, yet incredibly supportive. We come from a family of hard-workers who made it from the bottom up and have instilled that hard working mentality in us. Everything from the short business tips from our “Abuelo Guille” to the everyday help from our sisters, it is what has made starting and running a business so exciting.
