One of our favorite things to do is to ask the folks we are inspired by what they are inspired by. We’ve shared some of their responses below.

Mariela Mejias | Writer

My inspiration came from myself and everything I’ve been through. Getting a divorce after 25 years of being married, becoming a single mom and getting into the dating scene at 40. Here in Miami, I have found it to be very difficult to find Mr Right yet. That has made me become even more independent and I don’t regret one second of it. Given the experiences I’ve had and the experiences of my close friends, I took it upon myself to begin writing to inspire women like me that anything is possible even without a man. Read more>>

There’s so many things that inspire me on a daily basis. From nature, to music, to quotes, friends and family, and even strangers, I like to start every day with an open mind. That way I’m open and receptive to anything new that can spark an idea or motivate me to push forward with something that might be scaring me. There is no one thing I can label as the cause for my inspiration. It varies daily but what does remain constant is a curious mentality that allows me to see everything with a different set of eyes. What I am inspired the most by is LIFE yes I said life because it covers many areas that I am fascinated by and have a lot of love and passion for. My art is always telling a story and honestly, life is a perspective, and we all see it differently. Some of the things about life that inspire me are mother nature, the galaxy, and futuristic ideas. If you take a look at my art you will see all three topics integrated to it. One of the things that I have learned to do is to slow down and appreciate the beauty of what has been given to us as a gift. Life is everything from the air we breathe to the sun that wakes us up in the morning. Read more>>

My work emerges from a deep interest in nature, which inspires me in all its forms. I’m in especial awe with that minuscule and intangible “universe”—comprised of waves, particles, energy—which contains truths that apply to absolutely everything. That’s why, I use my artistic practice as a vehicle to understand and connect with the natural world at a fundamental level. This allows me to explore how nature intrinsically operates, to examine its creative methods, behaviors and properties, and to reveal its often overlooked poetic qualities. Read more>>

What inspires me? That is a great question and definitely one of my favorites. I believe inspiration is the most important thing in the beginning stages of starting a business, especially for small businesses. For me, the ocean was and still is my number one inspiration followed by my travels. The ocean has always been my happy place, a safe place, and the place where my creativity blooms. From the colors to the textures to the sounds. I find myself incorporating shells into the majority of my pieces. My travels have also been a huge inspiration to me. Read more>>

There are many things that inspire me, like my family, my culture, nature, a meaningful conversation, even a dream but family is definitely my number one inspiration. Everything that I do, in one way or another, revolves around it. Whole Together Now started as an online recipe index for my girls, a place for them to have all mommy’s recipes in one place. They inspired me to create this page, and not only they are my most honest critics, they also like to come up with ideas, experiment in the kitchen, they like to be involved. Read more>>

Leonor Anthony | Artist & Activist

At the beginning of my career I was inspired by religious themes and works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. I loved to reinterpret these masterpieces in a more conceptual and modern way and make them my own. Now I look back at my earlier works as if they were done by someone else, it was just my younger self. For the last ten years my deepest inspirations have come from the human condition, mainly social and environmental issues, and the reason I became an artivist – I use art as a vehicle of activism. Being born in Cuba and becoming a political refugee at the tender age of five led me to a life of migration and hyphenation. Read more>>
