Oh my, well, everyone thinks that writing a book and publishing it is super easy and that as soon as your book is published, you become a best seller and enjoy a nationwide book tour. That couldn’t be further from the truth for the majority of authors. Writing a book shouldn’t be something that is taken lightly. For fiction, writers need to take the time to develop the plot and characters, then get feedback from readers to make sure your story is solid. Shilpa Iyengar: I think “outsiders” think that fashion is a very glamorous career and that the majority of the time you get to design and go to fancy events. But it is like running any business; most of the time is spent figuring out production logistics, marketing effectively, and increasing sales. There is a lot of spreadsheet-ing I think people are unaware of! Harmony Pilobello: I think people outside of the industry often don’t understand how complex the production cycle is or how hard it is to build transparency in the supply chain. The one thing that saddens me the most is the fact that the vast majority of people, both in the U.S and worldwide, are unaware of the many successful treatment options that are available for anyone struggling with anxiety, depression, addiction, and long covid symptoms such as mental fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and insomnia. I think a lot of people believe it’s very easy to self publish. It definitely can be, if you take a few shortcuts! But, if you truly want your product to stand on shelves next to other, traditionally published books, there is a lot to learn. As a children’s book author the text is important, but the illustrations bring the words to life. Finding the right illustrator for your story who can capture your vision and your budget, can take months of research.
