I was raised in Israel by parents who immigrated from Uzbekistan, governed by the Soviet Communist Party. The KGB would routinely ransack and search homes, and confiscate anything deemed illegal. Fear and anxiety forced my parents’ generation to conceal and organize belongings in innovative ways. Eventually my parents fled to Israel to start a new life and raise their family. I’m from Miami, FL with a Dominican and Puerto Rican background. When I came to Miami from Puerto Rico, Spanish was my only language. Growing up, I watched my mother sacrifice a lot for me and my sister. As a single mother of two, she made sure we had food on our table, went to great private schools and had a roof over our heads.
