We had the good fortune of connecting with Carolina Sanchez-Hervas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carolina, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As my Master’s program came to an end, I had to decide what my next move was. Around the same time, I started getting requests for translation from friends and acquaintances. I had always been known for speaking many languages, so sometimes people would call on me to help them translate something. I realized that I enjoyed translating and I started to pursue more opportunities in that area. Right before graduation, the idea for starting a translation company occurred to me. I had been looking at job opportunities and nothing fit my interests or skills. Translation was something that I was good at and that there was a demand for, so I saw it as a viable business.

What should our readers know about your business?
CSH Translation is a language service provider that provides translation in over 20 languages. We specialize in financial translations and legal translations, although we provide all kinds. My passion for languages was the foundation for my business, so I put that into everything I do. There are so many language service providers out there, so I think it’s important to have a personal touch. I am fluent in English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Russian, so I use my languages on a daily basis to speak with my clients in the language they feel most comfortable in. Translation is truly an art form, and so much work goes into ensuring a project is up to the highest standard, so when customers are happy, it means I have done my job right.

Over the years, I’ve learned that good things take time to build and create. You have to be patient and stay the course, but also be willing to adapt along the way. It’s okay if the original plan changes. A lot of people get hung up about getting a job in their area of study—I know I was. Sometimes that works out and sometimes you end up joining a totally different industry and discovering a new passion or skill you didn’t know you had. I think everything happens for a reason, and it’s important to take opportunities as they come to see where they can lead you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Miami has beautiful weather and nature, so the beach would be one of the first stops. After a nice morning at the beach, I would take them to Pura Vida, one of my favorite lunch spots for a healthy bowl. Miami also has a vibrant art scene, so I would also take them to see some local museums. Some of my favorites are the Institute of Contemporary Art, the Rubell Museum and the de la Cruz Collection. An afternoon in Wynwood is also a must for any out of towner. Another great way to see Miami is by water, and a great, inexpensive way to do so is by renting a paddle board. So, I would probably take them paddle boarding in Miami Beach to try and see the manatees and dolphins. Dinner plans would include Mandolin, which is an iconic Miami spot that never disappoints.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
To my parents, who taught me their native language, and who have always supported me and loved me unconditionally. To my husband who inspired me to start my own business and has lent his unconditional love and support. To my sister-in-law, who has taught me so much about running a business. To my loyal clients, many of who have been with me throughout the years and without whom I would not have a business.
