We had the good fortune of connecting with Jess Orta and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jess, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to be different from all the typical Coquito mom and pops shops, I’ve seen on social media etc. From the start I did know my culture was something I wanted to include, since I am not Puerto Rican (as it is a Puerto Rican staple). I knew I had to be original, trendy and delicious.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Coquito is a seasonal beverage that is usually enjoyed during the holidays. Us #CoquitoDealers call that time of year #coquitoseason. Like mentioned before my culture is one thing I am extremely proud of (Cuban/Costa Rican). I definitely wanted to include some those flavors that I grew up with into Coquito Miami 305. This is why my flavors are names after Cuban bakery staples, like Pastelito de Guayaba and Cafe con Leche.

Starting up….While starting up wasn’t difficult it was creating the Coquito Miami 305 Brand that was the hard part. I wanted to be stylish, “cool”, unique while keeping the Miami Vibe. It wasn’t all unicorns and rainbows or should I say coconuts and guava. I had lots of feedback not always positive and so much unsolicited advice from others who never even dabbed into sales, let alone making a drink. But, that gave me my drive and motivation I didn’t let them “dim my light”.

It’s only been 3 years, what I’ve accomplished in this short time continues to amaze me. From a simple idea, to selling what I thought was a great first year of 300 bottles to now producing about 500 bottles a week. Bonus is stocking up shelves to local businesses such as PineCrest Bakery’s and more.

Coquito Miami 305 is the official Coquito of the 305, if you didn’t know that now you know!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh this sounds fun….

To a local like me, I think I’d start the day with a nice brunch with an ocean view or maybe a rooftop view. From mimosas, then to margaritas we take a nice drive to Fort Lauderdale beach and spend a day laying out.

Later that evening, we can go to a nice dinner depending on your mood, I could go to Casa de Angelo’s in Ft. Lauderdale or maybe enjoy Kuro and test our luck with the black jack tables.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely would love to shout out my family who has been there helping me from the start and their support has meant a lot and I am very grateful for it.
