We had the good fortune of connecting with Roque Medina and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Roque, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I decided to start my own business at the age of 24. At the time, I was working for an Interior Design Company, I worked hard and I was very productive and successful, the company’s growth was big and steady. After 2 years, I applied for a promotion but I didn’t get it. I remember my boss and her accountant talking me out of it, I stared at the walls of that office, they were old brick painted with an off white color. These walls were covered with oversized art leaning against it. I was looking at that room I took a deep breath and at that point I knew deep in my soul that the next step will be to work for myself. The feeling and the thoughts stuck for the coming weeks and before the end of that month I summited my two weeks notice and started my own business. Since then I opened and closed a couple businesses, If anyone would had told me at that point of my life that I would dedicate my life 100% to Fitness today, I would have told them – You are crazy! But here I am. My name is Roque Medina and I’m a Personal Trainer and a Group Fitness Instructor. The best part of doing fitness is that I’m loving every minute of it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I’m from Venezuela. I grow up in the Andes in a rural area. I was surrounded by trees, small rivers and a lot of farm animals. I did a lot of walking, running and hiking growing up. I was constantly moving and exercising. I never thought that aspect of my childhood would be the foundation of who I became today.

A rural area also gives you a different perspective of community. The less people around the more close you became to one another, instead of just being acquaintances. That experience translated to the work I do today. Every time I meet a new member at the gym where I teach group classes or every time a new client come to my private studio, I want them to feel welcome. I want them to feel that we can became close friends. I believe we all have the ability to work together in developing a relation that can last forever.

I always remind myself that small steps go a long way. I keep an agenda with short and long term goals. For me, that is a constant reminder that I can become better in what I do and offer the best of me to others. I constantly put myself in other people’s shoes, this gives me a perspective of where we stand as a group and how we can evolve together. As I said, before I am a personal trainer and group fitness instructor. I dedicate my time to create and deliver experiences that make others feel accomplished and capable to improve, not just their physical appearance but the way they are approaching life. Changes do not happen overnight. But for those that stick to the program, show consistency and perseverance, positive changes come to them. As a result, I’m so proud to say that I’m part of this beautiful community. We support each other because we truly care for one another, constantly reinforcing love and support. This is key for all us.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

I’m a creature of habit and I tend to go the same places all the time as long drinks and food and consistently good. I move a lot between Fort Lauderdale and Miami. If my best friend was here, I would start by making a reservation in The Standard Miami for at least three days. I really enjoy their facility and common areas, the pool is amazing. Close enough to Lincoln Road and a drive away to Brickell, Wynwood or Miami Design District all these are interesting places check out.

I like to hangout at Casa Florida Miami for cocktails. Zuma restaurant for Lunch. Mila Restaurant for dinner.

In Fort Lauderdale, I love where i live because it’s easy to walk to bar and restaurants my favorite restaurant in Wilton Manors is Union kitchen and bar. For brunch I go to Holly Blue is always a good choice! in Fort Lauderdale. If you’re out late check out drinks at Drynk Bar & Lounge. I might be there!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank to Powerhouse Gym Fort Lauderdale and Powerhouse Gym Miami. Because everyone involved with these gyms from the owner to the newest members treat each other like family and it is been a great experience to me connect with South Florida communities throughout these facilities.
