We had the good fortune of connecting with Joyce Taufer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joyce, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?

I think a few things helped me succeed in my career: Going out of my way to exceed client expectations: even if it is just with the small details. These little actions will be the ones that will make your client refer you to their friends
– be flexible: understand that some things may change during the design process
– be transparent and clear about managing expectations: do not promise something you can’t deliver
– say NO to projects/clients you know won’t be a good fit for you and your brand.

And above all, be committed. Live and breathe your projects. Make sure you are giving your clients the best home possible!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

Going “back to school” in my mid-thirties, with two small children at home was not easy. While most of my classmates could give 100% of their free time to work on the school projects, I was changing diapers and attending playdates with my kids.

Graduating in 2019, just before Covid hit the World could have spelled disaster for my new career, but fortunately, it granted me the opportunity to help people live better inside their own homes and was a catalyst for the growth of the business.

After successive, successful projects, a feature in Hong Kong’s (my base at the time) most prominent newspaper and an amazing 8-page spread in Tatler Hong Kong, I received the news we were moving to Miami. It was hard to leave behind everything I had built. Now, after 8 months in this beautiful city, I’m ready to start again, bringing my Asian and European influence to Miami homes.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

My favorite places into take visitors in the city are: – Wynwood walls
– South Pointe at South Beach
– Design District
– Walk around Coconut Grove
– Do some shopping in Merrick Park in Coral Gables

Miami has a lot of great restaurants, so I’ll just list a few:
– Mandolin (I just LOVE the atmosphere there)
– Cote
– Ariete
– Sunset drinks at The Lido
– The Bazaar by José Andrés

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

My mentor and business partner, Enrique Moya-Angeler was the first person who believed in me and opened the door to work with him at the beginning of my career. Being a Teacher, an Architect and a Construction Engineer, I was learning from him every day. Now we are living on different continents but I will always be grateful for his support.
