We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Rosemeyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
The balance of being out in nature to find inspiration and to come up with new ideas and new projects to pitch etc is a must for me. I cannot have one without the other. If I am inside days on end, editing, invoicing, pitching new ideas to clients and potential clients WITHOUT going outside, I don’t feel like myself. Part of this is why I have a career in photography and specifically in action sports where I can be outside and in nature capturing photos of some of the best athletes.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It’s definitely very challenging to be a women photographer in the action sports industry but, I have never let that stop me. I pushed my focus towards women/non-binary/bipoc in these sports that aren’t getting documented and not getting highlighted as much as they should. Nothing brings me more joy to get a shot of a rider that has never had a camera pointed at them before or getting someone published who is absolutely crushing it but, aren’t featured because they aren’t as high on the tier as their fellow competitors.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If it was in the summer in Vermont, we would start off the day by get a good breakfast, you can’t really go wrong here because everything is fresh and farm raised. From there, we would go to the local DIY skate park, link up with some of my good friends that rip there and all head to a swimming hole. We would end the day by having a fire over some good beers and being in good company.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First off, I wouldn’t be here without the support from my friends and family so, thank you for the endless support. Thank you to Pete over at Jamestown Skate Products and Ryan, Clint and crew at Homewood Snowboards ( when they were around). This was my jumping off point to get my foot into the door when I just got out of college. Thank you to Tony Chiuchiolo for launching my career in snowboarding over at Sugarbush Parks, I wouldn’t be here without you and I miss you very much. Thank you to all of the riders, bikers, skateboarders, etc that have let me point my camera at them past and present and continue to support me, you all rule and I love you. Thank you to all the brands and magazines that have supported me both past and present, I appreciate you all so much.
Thank you to anyone that has ever offered me advice and helped guide my career path and choices: Ryan Bent, Aaron Blatt, Peter Cirilli, Tim Zimmerman, Brian Nevins, Pat Bridges, Sean Genovese, Jess Kimura, Scott Barber, I know I am forgetting people but, you know who you all are!
