We had the good fortune of connecting with Kewina Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kewina, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting my own business involved three variables: being a mom, my health and time freedom. As a single mom, I found myself always working and having to miss certain small events that I definitely wanted to be present for. If I wasn’t working, then I was always rushing and speeding through the day so much that I rarely had time to just enjoy being a mom. I knew something in my life had to change because time was running out. My son at the time was in the seventh grade and I already knew that I needed to come up with a solution prior to him entering into high school. He is a very busy athlete and I vowed to myself that I would never miss any games during his high school years. I am proud to say, I never missed a game.

Another part of my thought process was how unhappy I was at the time with my then current field of employment. At that time, I was a paralegal, and it just wasn’t exciting for me anymore. As a matter of fact, I honestly do not believe I ever found the opportunity exciting, it literally just paid the bills. I remember coming to work and literally be in tears because I truly didn’t want to be there. I tried to bounce around from different firms thinking that would solve the problem, but it never did. I was miserable. Other times, I would arrive at work and have a full panic or anxiety attack and have to leave to go to the ER and be told my blood pressure was extremely high (note: I do not have high blood pressure). My primary doctor at the time told me that my health was starting to be affected by the stressors that came with the job and that I needed to make a sound decision before things got worse. It was a no brainer as to what needed to be done, I just had to figure out what was next and when. The truth is, I spent a lot of time helping others, preparing for trials, missing out on holidays and not being able to plan family vacations because of my employment. I also spent a lot of time crying, praying and manifesting my escape although I had no idea what it looked like. The day came when I feel God led me to an opportunity that provided me a brand-new beginning. I remember, I didn’t even have the money to start my business, but I did it anyway and stepped out on faith. I am so glad I did.

Since then, my decision to start my own business has allotted me the time freedom I so desperately needed then and appreciate so much now. I was granted an opportunity to witness my son win a State Championship in 2023 (his Junior year) while being his number one fan on the sidelines. At the same time, I no longer have to speed through the day because I now get to create my own schedule and have full control of my time while helping others achieve their goals and dreams. I absolutely love it here. The only part I hate is that I didn’t figure this out sooner.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a Mortgage Loan Officer, a Credit Advocate, Tax Preparer and a Notary Public. I know it sounds crazy but I am strongly thinking about adding Real Estate Agent this year. I chose to build my business around the financial industry because it was the one opportunity I saw that would always be needed. Let’s be honest, everyone will have to file taxes, refinance or want to purchase a home and need assistance with their credit or having a witness present while signing certain documents.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would first like to thank God. On February 26, 2020, I made the decision to hand over my keys at the law firm and step out on faith as an entrepreneur. I heard him give me the “ok” that morning. Through all the trials and tribulations that come with being an entrepreneur, God has never forsaken me, and I want to give it back to him for always protecting me and guiding me.

Next, I would like to shoutout my son, Amari Nealy. While he is currently only 18-years old, he is my driving force that allows me to push forward each day. I know that every move I make he is watching, and he pushes me (without even knowing it) to strive to create footsteps that he can proudly follow. He is always asking me questions about my goals I have set and what’s going on with my business. It’s crazy because outside of wanting to play college or professional basketball, he now wants to be an entrepreneur. I believe that has a lot to do with me, so I enjoy watching him get ready for his future. Amari, I want to thank you for just allowing me to spread my wings and build a brand and a legacy that you can be proud of. You have never once complained, and I want to truly thank you for that. There is no other person on this planet that means as much to me as you do. You will be great as I only produce greatness. I love you so much. Continue to make me proud kid. The world is ours.

I would also like to give a shoutout to my dad, Osborn Smith, Jr. When I made the decision to become an entrepreneur, he is the ONLY person who said, “it’s about time.” He has supported me since day one. He told me that the road will not always be easy, there will be bumps in the road but that he had my back on those dark days. He truly kept his word and has helped me so much along the way. I want to thank you for your encouragement, your enthusiasm, for always showing up and for always having my back. I honestly, wouldn’t still be doing as much as I am doing without you. Thank you and I love you.

I want to give a Shoutout to my mentor, Kevin Blake. I was always taught that you never meet an individual on accident. Sometimes that meet and greet could be short, but it still serves a purpose. I now understand why I was referred to Mr. Blake. A simple phone call that was intended to discuss my personal credit granted me an opportunity to start a business and here we are almost five years later, and I am still being mentored by the same individual. Coach Kev, I want to thank you for the lessons you taught me on being an entrepreneur, how to “STAND ON BUSINESS” and your help on building my empire from the ground up. I don’t trust a lot of individuals, but when that person was sent by GOD, you really can’t doubt the intent. Thank you for always encouraging me, your patience with me, for being a support system for this single mom and her son, for always uplifting me and pushing me outside of my comfort zone. It is a joy to run alongside you. I appreciate you. The best is yet to come. See you at the T.O.P.

I want to give another shoutout to my mentor, Quamecia Compton. This woman is simply amazing. Have you ever met an individual with a tiny voice but a huge heart of gold? Well, I was blessed to meet that individual and Quamecia is just that. From the first time we met she said she saw nothing but leadership in me. She has always been there to teach, to encourage, to uplift, to pray and of course to make me laugh. I want to thank you for pouring into me and allowing me to expand my knowledge as it pertains to taxes. If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t be as successful as I am and would not be able to lead my team to victory. Thank you for believing in me.

I want to personally give a shoutout to Jamiel Williford for recommending me for this amazing opportunity to share my story with Shoutout Miami. I also want to give a big shoutout to all my friends and family who have supported me throughout the years by either signing up for one of the services, joining the team or sharing what I do to someone else. I want to thank all of my clients for choosing, trusting and believing in me to help them achieve their dreams. This is what was missing from working at the law firm. My heart is always open to helping others and my clients allow me to be proud of what I do on a daily basis. We will have more homeowners and business owners this year, we will have more individuals educated about financial literacy this year and we will have more moms and dads making more money this year than they did last year. It’s UP from here. I am just excited to be a part of the 75 for all movement to make things happen and stick around for the results.

Finally, I want to thank my teams Made Millionheirs and Game Changers for trusting me to mentor them, lead them and run alongside them. I say this all the time, “I am NOTHING without my team,” and I mean that. I take my role as a leader very seriously because I have individuals depending on me to guide and lead them correctly. All of you make me so proud and are one of the main forces that pushes me to get out of bed in the morning. When one is able to help another business partner achieve success, then you know you are doing something right. That feeling is simply out of this world. To both teams, I am all in when it comes to you. I will not stop until I see all of you achieve greatness and so much more. I just want to truly say thank you to each and every one of you. I love you. This is our year and we about to show out. Let’s Go and Let’s Grow!!!!
